Is Dave a great Songwriter?

Unread post by Elliottman » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:41 pm

I was in the pub having a couple of pints when we got talking about great song writers, Dillan, Simon, Springsteen, Britney Spears etc
When i was driving home i got listening to DDTW and though "shit this songs has so much thought and meaning behind it". Great song, great lyrics. Dave has also wrote other amazing songs with great lyrics, Seek Up, Dreaming Tree, Say Goodbye, Stay or leave the list could go on.

But we also know he has wrote some shit lately too. EBWU haunts me, first half of dreamgirl is a disgrace lyrically, some Everyday songs are horrible. But every writer goes through bad spells im sure. He's picked it up a bit lately with IDOY and i particulary like the lyrics to Sister.

So my question is, when its all said and done, and the dust has settled on the Dave Matthews Band, can Dave go down in history as a great song writer? Hit Yes or No and give your reason why.

ive put yes becasue of the fact he is my hero! haha. But in terms of music, i cant get enough. I love him and the Band, his music has done so much for me and got me through some tough times. So yeah ill put down he's great. But there are a lot of people on here that know a lot more songwriters than i do, so will have more to compare with.

A lot of cool people aren't afraid to say he's not a great guitarist or a great vocalist, and those are definitly debatable. But I think that there's no question that he is most certainly a great songwriter.

I didn't come up with this but I agree with it: Dave is not so much a great songwriter, as much as he is a great poet and musician.

What would some of you say, lyrically, are his best 3 songs? Lyrically?

And yes Dave is a great songwriter, sure he has some absolutely horrendous songs, who doesn't? But the majority of his songs are good and some of those are among the best songs I've ever heard.
