Hardest part of a song

This may sound retarded...but I can play pretty much every Dave song and have it sound pretty frickin' good. (Around me, it doesn't count on ly to play it...you need to play and sing at the same time...that's the challenge).
Anyway...the point is...I've been trying to play the verse to Satellite for literally 9 years...and STILL cannot get it. I can play all of the notes...but put them together and try to sing over it...not happening for me.
Wierd.

i had that problem but then i stopped playing exactly like dave. i think he just hits down on each string w/ his pick, i do the thing where you hit down on one string then up on the next etc. i think it's called circular picking or alternate picking (grock or fatjack, a little help). but after i mastered it that way i could sing w/ it cause i didn't have to think about two hands and my vocals at the same time.baboonfarmer wrote:This may sound retarded...but I can play pretty much every Dave song and have it sound pretty frickin' good. i was too lazy to learn the mutinf for the stone, so i actually just practice hitting that one string really quickly. and if i miss, i've already accidentally muted the two ones below so it still sounds good. i havent really tried it but BOWA looks kinda hard to sing to. i can sing with the stone and tripping billies. overall, i think that either one of the those two was the hardest

At first, the verse to Billies was very hard. It took me almost two months straight to learn that one. But once I got it down, and could make my hand make all of the fast stretches and slides, it became quite easy. I even finger-pick Billies now, just because. That reminds me, have any of you tried to fingerpick songs that should be picked regularly? (i.e. Billies, #40). It really brings out some songs. You should try it. I know it sounds weird, but I also like to fingerpick Gravedigger and Grey Street: very cool when you want the song to be real quiet. Also, The Stone has kicked my ass ever since I got my guitar a year ago. Warehouse, too.

The slide to the 10x710-- on SMTS took me forever to make sound right. Same with the billies verse.

For the 1 3 5 & 3 5 7 thingies, I hammer on the notes as I play them like in warehouse. They come out much cleaner that way.
