I can't seem to sing and play...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I can't seem to sing and play...

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else has or in the past had a problem singing and playing at the same time. I practice, but I can't really sing and play. It's kinda funny actually, I can play a song pretty damn good on my guitar, but when I throw my voice in, I lose the damn rythmn. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Thanks for any replies.

That's how it was once I started trying to do that. Now, it's a piece of cake. I made sure that I could play a song 100% through while like watching TV and talking to someone.
My guitars:
Taylor 714
Taylor 614ce
Martin Sigma DR-41
Epiphone Chet Atkins SST (Ebony)
Danelectro 56-U2 reissue
Fender American Deluxe Strat
Fender Aerodyne Telecaster
BC Rich Eagle Custom

i used to have the same problem, and sometimes i still have it...
for the songs i already know, i try to play and sing along w/ the audio clip...when i start not to lose voice/guitar rhythm, i try to play and sing by myself.
for the songs i dont know yet, i always try to learn em singing along ;)

Just a bit of info as its been given to me. Apparently it is much harder to learn how to play and sing the longer you've been playing guitar without singing. That's just something I was told, not too sure about the truth to it. I suppose that the earlier you pick it up, the easier it will be though.

I find that I can sing beautifully without the guitar, but when I start playing I sound different. I guess its just a matter of practicing.

it sort of came naturally to me so i may not have the best advice. but if i can give any sort of advice it's to pick a song that has a very basic rhythm, not only in chord changes but in strumming pattern and start w/ that. make sure it's full chord so yo udon't have to worry w/ hard chords or muting, and never let your strumming hand stop strumming. it shouldn't stop for any reason.

also, you could take a basic full chord song, say G C D for example, and hum the melody. once you have that down, start putting words in. make sure you know the words well so you don't have to worry w/ reading them.

do everything in small steps and one day it'll hopefully just click. good luck.

As with everything else, it comes in time and with practice. Just keep at it and try those tips that everybody was giving you above, and eventually you'll find yourself doing it so naturally without even thinking about it.

Practice ... fail ... practice more ... gets better ... and on

Best advice is to just practice and one way I dealt with this problem is to just hum the song outloud, meaning dont actually say the words just hum the notes, that way your not so worried about pronunceciacion of words. God I have no idea how to spell that word! LOL! Im an idiot!

for me, it works best to learn the words, and get the melody down before learning to play it on the guitar
that way, you learn the guitar to fit in with the words, rather than struggling to fit the words in with the guitar.
