rosewood = cheaper guitars

ebony is used on better guitars because it is not only one of the strongest woods available, but also because of its incredibly smooth feeling and better sound.

Eh, I think rosewood sounds good.

I'm curious though....How would a three piece back on a guitar made of EIR on the left and right and koa in the middle or would it sound no different?

i believe my esteemed colleague is correct.

depending on the size of the koa piece, the tone will not change as much as you would expect. however, it might add a tad bit more of warmth and complexity to the tone.
not enough to make it worth it...

i just don't think you'd notice the difference. like a different top wood has a huge factor on the sound. so big that it drowns out anything that the back might add. really the back just works to project the vibrating air created by the top. so it really is only used to accentuate the top. it's like icing on the cake. it's all sweet and fluffy and generally tastes the same.

as you can see, i have certain topwoods for different styles, as some accell (sp?) in specific areas. the body style will have a huge impact. like someone (sorry dont feel like looking) said, the main choice of wood is the topwood HOWEVER the back/sides to play a large role in determining the sound.

maple is a very transparent wood so youre just going to hear the brightness.

coco is dark and heavy so youll get a lot of bass.

theoretically the darker the wood, the more bass it will produce.

also, the length between each grain in the wood plays a role in the tone.

any other questions, reply.

ohhhhhhh yeah..... coco surpasses EIR in both looks (amazing red tints and figuring) and sound. coco has been comparable to brazillian rosewood.

while this is true to an extent, it all varies from one peice of wood to another. even guitars made to the exact same woods will sound different. the best way would be to play the guitar to make sure it sunds like what you are prediciting from the woods cuz sometimes the results are not as great as you would hope.

koa and mahongany and other hardwoods, tend to cut off both highs and lows and leave you with a really mellow midrange.

i'm going to go back on my statement before and say that the back does have some play on the tone. sides don't but the back has say 20% of the tone and the top has 80. so maybe a stripe of koa on the back will do something but still not sure a single strip will do much.

I was going to be putting EIR on the two sides and koa in the middle on a 3 piece back like that on a d-35, but if I do that now I would probably go coco :)
