I did however have a great time at Va Beach. They played about 6 SU songs and really enjoyed them. So at least I saw one good show this year.

since when is the studio stuff as good as live? sans four songs on one album, DMB is a touring band, NOT a studio band. does anyone honestly leave a studio album in their car for lengthy periods of time? i doubt it.
i listen to before these crowded streets more than any other album or concert i have. that's the only one though. then it probably goes live in boone 3-29-03, live in central park, live in chicago, live in charlotte 6-28-05. (boone and charlotte are copies i got from shows i went to)
exactly. all you people want is another masterpiece, and you're just setting yourself up for a let down.

if i like it i will listen to it, and go out to the shows when they are flooding it with new songs. if i dont like it i wont do either. its not like dmb is the only band out there. if im not happy with their shit i listen to other stuff and attend other concerts. i really dont listen to them all that much anymore anyway. its been a long ass time since they released a new album that ive thoroughly enjoyed. i still love their live stuff as long as it isnt 8-9 stand up songs.

but the issue isn't what you would like for them to do or what you'd rather them to do. it's rather or not they should be considered a jam band. what you and mike are basically saying is because you would rather them change their songs up...their jams at the end of the song, because you'd rather them go different directions each time, that dmb cannot be considered a jam band? well, IF they aren't considered a jam band i'm gonna need a better argument than that.
no no, i meant by my "but i would like...." to be just something i want to see them do. it isnt my reasoning for them not being a jam band. in comparison to a lot of music out there, they are, yeah, but comparing them to THE jam band(the grateful dead), they arent.

(not to go back to the jam band part of the thread or anything)

you're def right. i am going to be let down again, but if i just settle for mediocre and say that stand up is the best dmb can do right now then i really have no reason to listen to them at all. so i'll keep hoping, and after the next album i'll keep hoping, and so on and so forth. and hopefully one day i won't be let down.

and i'm not dismissing batson already either. i'm going to listen to the new album w/ a new ear and hope that it's good. and if i'm let down, then hey guess what...i'm let down. but like i said before, if i give up hope then i might as well not listen to anything they coem out w/ in the future cause i'm not happy w/ what they're doing.

I don't give a shit what the Official Definition of a Jam Band is.

In my opinion, a jam band is a band that is concerned with music for music. Not with how many times their video is shown on mtv, not what they're wearing, none of that image crap.

Also, if a band extends a song instrumentally in any way, live or otherwise, i consider that jamming. What do you call the last 2 minutes of Crush on btcs? That's playing instruments with other people because it's a blast to do and because you love it. That's jamming.

i like tictacs wrote:those 21 minute songs NEVER CHANGE. for the most part, a two step is a two step is a two step unless there is a guest. a jimi thing is a jimi thing. listen to phish. they are a jamband. listen to the flecktones. they jam and change the song. DMB keeps the same structure, same guitar, same bass and same drums for 20 minutes and butch solos over it. that does not equal jam band.
would you like dave to play a different instrument?

they change their song's "jams" around every tour i've been too..

i will always classify them as a "jam band"

how did busted stuff get dragged into this?? i don't recall seeing one thread about how no one likes it. the only thing i can think of is how it's not as good as it's quasi-predecessor(the lillywhite sessions). but before you go about generalizing, generalize correctly. and welcome.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here. You're gonna tell one of the most successful bands of the last decade how they need to act?

I think all of you should stop whining about the new dmb sound and widen your horizons if you don't like the direction they're heading.

that sucks as a comment. i listen to a lot of bands who have changed their sound (MUCH more drastically than dmb has) over the years. the change is not the problem. it's that the change wasn't good.

my horizons don't need shit.

ok...based on various definitions of jam band, DMB is now considered a semi-jam band. meaning they definately jam, but they dont do any grateful dead level jamming. they are definately a jam band in context/relation to what is out there now
