would u use this as a guide...
i apologize if this is a stupid question, i don't know, but is it a good idea to use live song books, like "live in chicago" and "live at luther college" to give a good idea of how to play these songs and the strumming patterns? even though dave uses variation of strumming and such.

i can read sheet music for guitar, because i have been taking lessons for over two years, but i guess for me its a good idea to look at the books, this site, listen, and to watch shows to be as accurate as possiblebbatsell wrote:Not unless you can read sheet music very well. You listen to the song to get the strumming, and you look at this site to learn how to play it.

I disagree with learning via tablature. I wish I had the ability to read sheet music for guitar. I'm still working on it.

Well, the music in those books is completely wrong. I agree, I hate guitar tabs, but these are the only ones that actually teach you the song correctly.charliemike wrote:I disagree with learning via tablature. I wish I had the ability to read sheet music for guitar. I'm still working on it.

I dont know, probably just sit and listen. I had a guitar teacher who was tabbing out jimi thing for me, he had about three different ways tio play it that sounded right. It was crazy, so eary song can be played a different way.musicalman865 wrote:how do they even make those song books?bbatsell wrote:Well, the music in those books is completely wrong. That's the thing about guitar. Each note or chord has a good number of different positions it can be played and still be the same note or chord.Dutch17 wrote:I dont know, probably just sit and listen. yea, ik what u mean, but learning theory and shit is always ur best bet for soloing and shit, there are definetly exceptions, u dont have to know music and theory to be a great guitarist, but anyones better off just learning something from theory and readingGrachi wrote:winglet82 wrote:Learning sheet music is nice, knowing tabs is fine, but ultimately not having to use music at all is probably the best. Wow... I couldn't disagree more. I guess if you just want to play for fun and don't plan on doing much with it, then fine.winglet82 wrote:Learning sheet music is nice, knowing tabs is fine, but ultimately not having to use music at all is probably the best. Sheet music is overrated.
If you really want to be a musician, want to play with other musicians, want to be able to learn new songs and solo, then I think you really need to know how to read music. You also need to understand at least some basic theory; I don't know that's possible without being able to read music.
