Dude if your not even trying to help, just stop wasting my (and your time) and let the other people who know about theory do so. I dont mean to get off on a rant here (Dennis MIller rocks) but i thought this place was about helping each other out to grow as guitarists (and as people i guess) and i dont see how you're doing either of these with your condescending and outright stupid comments please dont respond to this unless it has to do with the topic, im sorry i got off it. -peace

no, see, I told you what you needed to know, you can't just learn some magic theory in a minute to be able to play lead, that's not the way the world works, you don't want to accept it thinking there's an easier way. I could tell you the note names to the scale of a given song, but you wouldn't know what to do with them...if you'd read the first page maybe you'd understand it better. it's not the best stuff but between ken, hans and I we put together a really good starting point to go on that could answer your questions, but you have to want to learn it...no one wants to learn theory because it isn't fun. I'll be the first to admit that my theory classes aren't exactly the most fun in the world, but I'm realizing now that they're really helping me in my writing and what I do with songs and understanding what I'm doing which allows me to do more than I ever thought possible before I understood a bit of theory. but you can't just learn it with a post. it takes work, and just by the fact that you were asking just goes to show that you really didn't try to take in anything from what was said by the three of us theory dorks because we said enough there to get you going basically. so really, it comes down to a choice: do the work and learn the theory so you can control the guitar and music in general, or expect things to be easy and never really work and always allow the guitar to have the upper hand on you. you may say I'm unreasonable but that's what it comes down to, so quit acting like such a 16 year old and do something to help yourself.6StringSamurai wrote:Dude if your not even trying to help, just stop wasting my (and your time) and let the other people who know about theory do so. yeah, I kinda figured the question was reacting to that. but Elliot is right about how it takes practice to be able to apply the theory that you learn to the guitar. having the notes in your head and knowing where they are on the fretboard are too different things. Once you combine the two, however, the possibilities are endless. I don't know what every note is on the guitar by heart. I know the E strings notes and some of the other ones but, I guess it comes down to patterns that you learn and it's all repetetion sort of like learning chords. I'm rambling here so I hope I'm making sense. so, what timmy does, is out of my jurisdiction so to speak, but I don't mind talking about chords and shit like that. (I'm a rhythm player!!) Ok, here's what I've gotten from it: You must figure out the key that the song is in and use that scale. You don't change scales every time the chord changes.
