Learning Dave's way of playing is relatively simple, as long as you learn to slide and mute.. you're in..learn to sing & play .. then you're in

Not that you need any more advise, but I imagine you aren't cocking your wrist enough. Get your thumb well behind the neck. :D

how exactly do you mute strings effectively? (asde from the fact that you must practice... i still assume that there are right ways and wrong ways that guitarists mute strings)

anyway... for example... (this is from the Trippping Billies tab on this site)

Intro

E: ----------------------------------------------------------
B: ----------------------------------------------------------
G: -2---4----2---4---7---6---2---4----2---4---6---7---2---4--
D: -x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
A: -x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
E: -2---3----2---3---7---5---2---3----2---3---5---7---2---3--

How do you play the 1st and 4th strings while at the same time muting the 2nd and 3rd strings?

You don't. Only mute the A string, and ring the D.

thanks.

but i still have the same question: how do you mute the strings while keeping your fingers pressed on the right strings?

as far as i know, muting is like lightly pressing your finger on a string so that when you strum it, it produces a percussive sound... is this right?

if so, how do you do it for the tripping billies intro?

I usually use the finger that is fretting the low E (low = thick) and just kinda fold it over. It'll get really natural. Try warehouse verse a couple of times, that should learn you the muting really quick. Even if some people here consider it really hard.

1 = high e (thin string)
2 = B
3 = G
4 = D
5 = A
6 = E (thick string)

Guitar lingo when speaking about high and low is "reversed".
High on the neck means closer to the body, for example.

Get familiar with his style of chords he uses. Like two step, some of billies, the jam in lie in our graves, grey street etc. He uses those alot
some of the easier songs to play though i would think typical situation, seek up, two step, lie in our graves............

Crash is easy, Trippin Billies, Grey Street, One Sweet World

Warehouse was hard for me as was the natural intro of Trippin Billies

I still can't decide if I like Billies with the ringing D. I actually don't like it at all. But as for muting, a lot of "Dave" chords end up doing the muting for you. Position wise, such as Nancies, Billies and a few others. Your fingers just end up doing it for ya.
