Learning Dave's way of playing is relatively simple, as long as you learn to slide and mute.. you're in..learn to sing & play .. then you're in

how exactly do you mute strings effectively? (asde from the fact that you must practice... i still assume that there are right ways and wrong ways that guitarists mute strings)
anyway... for example... (this is from the Trippping Billies tab on this site)
Intro
E: ----------------------------------------------------------
B: ----------------------------------------------------------
G: -2---4----2---4---7---6---2---4----2---4---6---7---2---4--
D: -x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
A: -x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
E: -2---3----2---3---7---5---2---3----2---3---5---7---2---3--
How do you play the 1st and 4th strings while at the same time muting the 2nd and 3rd strings?

You don't. Only mute the A string, and ring the D.dbapollo wrote:how exactly do you mute strings effectively? (asde from the fact that you must practice... i still assume that there are right ways and wrong ways that guitarists mute strings)

Pat McInnis
thanks.
but i still have the same question: how do you mute the strings while keeping your fingers pressed on the right strings?
as far as i know, muting is like lightly pressing your finger on a string so that when you strum it, it produces a percussive sound... is this right?
if so, how do you do it for the tripping billies intro?

I usually use the finger that is fretting the low E (low = thick) and just kinda fold it over. It'll get really natural. Try warehouse verse a couple of times, that should learn you the muting really quick. Even if some people here consider it really hard.dbapollo wrote:thanks.

1 = high e (thin string)
2 = B
3 = G
4 = D
5 = A
6 = E (thick string)
Guitar lingo when speaking about high and low is "reversed".
High on the neck means closer to the body, for example.
