I don't know what kind of guitar you have but Taylor's website recommends dry, extra-fine steel wool (.000 to .00000). This is for their ebony fret boards. They say you can rub pretty hard without damaging it, just don't get it on the body of the guitar.

Here is the link for thewebsite FAQ. I have never done it but I can't imagine it would hurt since the fret board is wood.

this is the most common recommendation. you can buy "guitar" lemon ooil from dunlop but it's really the exact same stuff.

that's not good, it will cause more buildup and gunkiness. maybe you have a sealed fretboard but most guitars have exposed wood and that's just not good.

lemon oil will clean and protect. but if it's really bad (like years of guitar polish buildup) you can use alcohol to clean it up, but just wipe it on and then rub it off. and put oil on right away cuz the alcohol will dry out the fretboard and that will lead to cracks.

Incase you have a martin, their website does not recommend you use lemon oil.
Can I use lemon oil on my fingerboard?
We do not recommend using lemon oil on our fingerboards. The acids in lemon oil break down the finish of our guitars. It may also aid the corrosion of the frets and lessen the life of the strings.
