How Do You Strum?
How Do You Strum?
I was strumming with mostly my wrist (my forearm didnt move much, it just kind of twisted my wrist back and forth, but my forearm didnt have much up and down movement)
but I've been seeing some of the videos that have been posted, and it looks like a lot of you keep your wrist pretty much stiff and just move the forearm up and down (i've heard a much cleaner sound playing this way)
so is there a certain way to be strumming? or is it just preference?

I've always had a problem with strumming. I sometimes wonder whether it has anything to do with me being left handed playing a right handed guitar. Beginners books usually state moving from the elbow.

Dude, you've been on a roll lately. Between this and the post about laying your strings on the ground and playing without em I don't know how much more I can handle.Matty Boom wrote:i don't always strum, a lot of the times i will have paper plates and tape picks to them and drop them at certain points in teh song down at the strings, usually gives a pretty decent sound

Yeah, I definitely have to get into some songs, so it helps to move most of my arm and wrist while strummingBigSpeen3436 wrote:same here, I kinda move my whole arm cuz I get really into it sometimes2StepGranny wrote:It's all with what you're comfortable with. Technically you should use the wrist with only a slight bit of forearm movemant. If you have these big exagerated strums your wasting a lot of energy. Of course there's exceptions to every rule.
If your doing really fast stumming or tremelo picking than the wrist should be stiff and the forearm should do the work.
Whatever sounds good and feels comfortable.
