How Do You Strum?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How Do You Strum?

Unread post by Reckless » Fri Feb 06, 2004 2:35 am

I was strumming with mostly my wrist (my forearm didnt move much, it just kind of twisted my wrist back and forth, but my forearm didnt have much up and down movement)
but I've been seeing some of the videos that have been posted, and it looks like a lot of you keep your wrist pretty much stiff and just move the forearm up and down (i've heard a much cleaner sound playing this way)
so is there a certain way to be strumming? or is it just preference?

It's all with what you're comfortable with. Both my Forearm and wrist move, almost like Dave, but nearly as cool looking ;-) But along those lines.

I've always had a problem with strumming. I sometimes wonder whether it has anything to do with me being left handed playing a right handed guitar. Beginners books usually state moving from the elbow.

Dude, you've been on a roll lately. Between this and the post about laying your strings on the ground and playing without em I don't know how much more I can handle.

Yeah, I definitely have to get into some songs, so it helps to move most of my arm and wrist while strumming ;-)

Wait a minute........ NO AVATAR?!?! What happened?

Technically you should use the wrist with only a slight bit of forearm movemant. If you have these big exagerated strums your wasting a lot of energy. Of course there's exceptions to every rule.
If your doing really fast stumming or tremelo picking than the wrist should be stiff and the forearm should do the work.
Whatever sounds good and feels comfortable.
