Tales from the Studio

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Tue Mar 21, 2006 11:18 pm

I got some pictures and made a little music video today, just thought I would show you guys the studio that I record at and get free use to (Because I'm the TA for the recording class, plus he dosn't let anyone use the studio without me there...). Yes I am a lucky bastard :D !

Image

This is an overall shot of the studio. It's preatty quiet in ther for the most part but we just got 2 isolation booths, one primarily for the drums, so we are preatty much set now.

Image

This is from inside the control room. We use a Mac G5 to record on, everything from inside the studio goes into that Midas board which then goes into a digi design 002rack.

Image

The Midas board (A Midas Venice, one of the best boards I have ever heard...)

Image

The rack with all of the important crap :) ...

Image

There's the 002 rack.

Image

We have this Apogee Rosetta 800 AD/DA converter that everything runs through before going to the digi002rack, it makes stuff sound a hell fo alot better then just running the board strait to the 002...

Image

Kick ass monitors, this is one of a pair of Focus Audio FS788's. They retail for like $4500 and are excelent...

Image

Blue Circle BC26 power amplifier, it's what we have the monitors hooked up to. This things is awesome.

Image

The isolation booth i use to do guitar and vocals.

Image

I decided to set up a decca tree to record my guitar today. Basically what that means is that you have one mic recording strait on the source and the other 2 faced to the sides to pick up the ambiance, sounds preatty good. The mic in the middle is a Rode NTK tube mic, the ambiance mic's on the sides are a stereo pair of Neumann KM184's.

Image

I used a Neumann TLM-103 for vocals, one of the best.

You can go to that link and see a video i did today, it's me playing one of my songs, i took the audio I recorded on protools and synced it up with the video so you could hear how that decca tree sounds on the guitar, it came out preatty good in my opinion.

edit- The sounds on that website did not sound ass good to me (must be something with it being on the web...) so here is an mp3 of that song in the video...

Great, now I have a boner...

Kidding, but Goddamn I would love to be able to use a studio like that, your songs always sound very high quality.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

That's sick dude. You should try some other patterned mics on that Decca tree, maybe set up a Blumlein config along with the directional cardiod. Try a pair of omnis with some sort of baffle like a Jecklin disc in that small space too. That would be interesting.

I love the sound of Apogee's stuff. Just great.

Enjoy all this while you have it. I want to get in on something like this.

ya gata start somewhere, i was in the same boat a few years ago... and let me tell you, starting out with shitty stuff teaches you so much, you learn how to get the best sound you can with total shit and learn alot about placement and stuff.

Hey...what the hell?

Why would you go so low as to steal other people's lyrics?

This is straight from my friend John...He wrote these lyrics:

"Original lyrics...
You were the key to my heart,
And now that i've lost you
It's getting hard to open up again
Next time just leave the door wide open
And I'll go in, and sweep out all the pain

So I've officially had lyrics stolen from me, nevertheless, my first CD is due out this summer with all originals."

I honestly can't believe this. What a jackass move man, seriously.

just as a critique and in a serious manner - i think the guitar sounds good, but honestly i'd let someone else sing, or start singing with much more strength

also, thats weak as shit if you stole lyrics
