strumming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

yes the most important thing to adjust is your angle of attack towards the fret board. He hits all the verse notes in LIOG with angled downstrokes while muting the string around them, just in case he hits them by accident

I always say the same thing:

DONT LET YOUR UPSTRUM BE SHITTY! ok?

and also try to practise with both a pick and without.

Try this excersice for picking notes:

Code: Select all

G: -----------4--------
D: -4--5--7------7--5--
....D..U..D...U..D..U
There or in any pair of strings. EDIT: anywhere on the fretboard.

Oh my yes, definately practice with a pick. I absolutely regret not having used a pick in my early days of playing. I still to this day cannot use a pick fluently.

Get good at, when you strum (for example) an open A major chord, you don't hit the low E. What you are practicing by doing this is going through the motion of a full strum but not hitting all the strings.

Then, what you have to do for LIOG, is mute the strings below the one you are playing the note on, using the finger you are using to play the note with. Your fingertip hits the fretboard, and the rest of your finger is slightly off the fret board, muting the strings.

I hope that isn't confusing.

I use my fingernails, I hate picks even though I am good with one. Do not conform to what one artist does, make your own style.

i was doin the weird smiley cause it was confusing at first, but reading it closer I see what he was saying

the finger is angled differently so you can mute the other strings, essentially.

pretty sure thats what was being conveyed?

Yes. Different than barring with your finger, you are only hitting the desired note with your fingertip, and the rest of the finger mutes the strings you don't want to play.

Heres a quick video I made.

I apologize for the low quality, but all I have is a cheapo webcam.

Hope it helps!

He uses a pick for most songs (including Warehouse). The only tunes that I can think of off the top of my head he finger picks consistently are Grace Is Gone, Christmas Song, GGT, Where Are You Going, and maybe Dreamgirl. I am sure there may be a few more but that is what comes to mind right now.
