Creating Riffs

Hey I figured I'd make a thread about creating new riffs, just wondering what everyone has to say about composing new tunes.

A question I have is, sometimes I mess around and construct a riff and I'm not sure if it sounds similiar to something already out there or if im actually something new. Any thoughts?

I do the same thing. I'll come up with something that I think sounds really cool. Then I'll hear it on the radio or something. :lol: Don't worry about it, though. Odds are whatever you come up with has been done before.

There is literally no chord progression you could use that hasn't been used before, unless you're doing something that makes 0 musical sense.

Yeah I wouldn't worry. I'm sure the progressions in Dave's songs have been used a lot before.

when im learning new songs I try to take a chord that i see in the piece that ive never used before and try to build something around it

other times i try just moving my pinky around to see if i can create a new sound. I have a few decent ones if you want some examples
