SRVDMB, he's finally making sense. So I respect him for that and you should too. He Makes Vaild points. Take what they say and run with it. If they're an asshole they're an asshole, Like he said it's better to get sammed in here then up on stage, unless your playin that song at the quad; those ladies seemed to like it quite a bit. loldmbguitar718 wrote:I respect that you wrote a song, and had the courage to post it on here.SRVDMB wrote:dmbguitar718 wrote:Accepting what?SRVDMB wrote:dmbguitar718 wrote:So you come here looking for only positive feedback? You have an incredibly skewed sense of playing music professionally. Not everyone is going to like your product. Not everyone will praise you like Joe Schmoe will at some bar. Coming to grips with that is something that will aid you tremendously if you attempt to push your music further. You can't just put something out there for people to critique, and just slam everyone who may have negative comments.
Seriously, you have to see where I'm coming from...right?
I'm accepting it from everybody else......but not you
Negative feedback. Maybe i am being defensive.....But maybe i wrote a song and everybody fucking tells me it sucks and that it sounds too much like dave...Maybe i feel like nobody fucking cares about my shit. And dude get over yourself! Your performance is shitty! You stand there not moving at all......fucking move!!!! lol.....I'm done with this bullshit...I'm not gonna argue about my own music. Idk why i keep checking this looking at the people dissing me...Maybe in a month or two i'll put some more shit on this site. But i don't need anything negative right now. Thats it.....
Thanks for making me feel like i suck and that i have no talent and eveyone else is better then me,
Jack
However, if you're upset because you feel that nobody cares about your work, it will only get worse for you. Like I said before, not everyone will like your music. You can't just go and defend yourself every time (and in some cases here, you really can't defend the blatant Dave Matthews derivations). I understand that you put out a song that you care about, and that you enjoy. However, I get the feeling that you don't care what other peoople think. If so, then why are you here? I'm giving you feedback that could be very valuable to you as someone trying to start a career, and you're throwing it back in my face.
Get over myself? Are you kidding me? When did I say, "Look! Everybody look at me and how good I am!" I didn't. I'd appreciate it if you didn't misrepresent me like that.
Your last comment was especially worrying. If my comments (or anyone else's, for that matter) are going to drive you to feel like a horrible musician, you seriously need to consider putting your music out there. I will say this one last time: Not everyone will enjoy your music.
Take this however you may like, but I've given you a lot more constructive criticism than you may realize. You're going to hear it from more than just me, believe me.
"Man, I’m fucking singing you mother fucker. You’re paying me to sing here, if you want to fuck me in the ass, motherfucker come up here and fuck me in the ass." -DJM
There are things called constructive criticism and then this bullshit. Give the kid a break, tell him what he need to work on, but don't do that shit. ThanksSimsUK wrote:

Like everyone said the heavy Dave similarity is hard to get by. Good on you for putting it out there. The lyrics and delivery just didn't grab me. Not enough variation between the verse and chorus. I'd suggest doing something with the chorus vocally other than kinda shouting. Definitely a good start, i look forward to where it evolves to.

Jesus Christ what happened to this forum...
accepting constructive criticism is one thing but most of this is just abusive. I don't know how many of you ever post songs here, you should try it. It's terrifying. You have put together a song, a part of yourself, that leaves you wide open and of course you would love to hear people say they love it. But when they don't it can be crushing.
Many of you have legitimate points about the song, it does seem to wear its influence too much on the sleeve and it does lack a little bit of chordal movement,
that being said, it is also sung with a great amount of passion, in a good voice, and it is accompanied by pretty solid, rhythmic guitar work.
Just consider people's feelings a little when critiquing. Its okay to be honest but its important to be encouraging as well. Phrase your responses in two parts, "what i liked" and "what needs work." Put the positive first to build up the confidence so that the the reader will be more open to your suggestions. This is more than just courtesy, its how constructive criticism works.
Jack, you also need to learn to take the bad with the good. It is the only way you will get better. You have to have people pushing you. Try writing a song that is as far from dave matthews as you can, you may really suprise yourself! Ultimately, good music is about finding your own voice. You are talented musically and its time you start moving away from mr matthews and start trying to figure out what you want YOUR music to say.
You gotta toughen up a littletoo, what are you going to do when a drunk says "you suck" or throws a drink at you? This happens all the time and if you let it get to you, it will be crippling. Sure you have to stand up for yourself but you also have to laugh it off. This is coming from someone who has heard "you suck" over and over and over. Eventually, it doesnt really hurt anymore.
Anyways, lets just try to be civil here guys, this forum has a lot of potential to be very educational, informative and fun, and that separates it from a lot of places on the internet. Lets keep it that way.

Nobody abused him. We were honest. Sugar coating any negative comments are using euphemisms is not going to help him. Everything I said was honest, and I was constructive in my comments. He just couldn't deal with what I said. Hell, he said "don't tell me that my lyrics suck." What is that, honestly?

I know you were honest pat, i respect you and know your abilities. I wasn't specifically targeting you, my comments were meant as in general. As far as sugarcoating is concerned, i am not saying you should be dishonest and kiss ass but instead of saying "your guitar part is so derived from dave matthews that it's hard to listen to" you could say "you sing well and your guitar playing is good but i hear too much dave matthews in your voice and it distracts from the overall song"dmbguitar718 wrote:Nobody abused him. I also wont justify a comment like "dont tell me my lyrics suck" that is just being overly defensive, but by the time we got to that point, he had shut down completely.

This feels like character building lesson that you're given in kindergarten. Whoever wrote this song, I didn't listen but you need to stop being so oversensitive about this. If you want to be a musician it's a goddamn job, and guess what, the audience is your employer. If they don't like the work you do then you don't make it.
I felt there was nothing wrong with what anyone had to say, they expressed their opinions honestly and it's up to you to decide if you will further yourself to fully suit yourself, your audience or provide a balance of the two. It's established that it's your song and it's also established that it's the way that you like it- good work on that one then. Just, by the way it seems to be going, don't expect people to agree with you. You have this really petty and sheltered perspective that seems to feel that people will be really nice and empathetic and compensate with positive reinforcement if there is anything wrong. Tough shit.

Dude, you're in the Recording and Critiquing forum. If you didn't want any critique (and I'd say the vast majority of it is solid stuff that could make your song better, from people who clearly know what they're talking about, Pat etc.) why post your song at all?
As far as your song goes, the similarity to DDTW, Bartender, any other song Dave has done in Drop D overwhelm anything original you've done really. If you dig it, cool, but if you're playing this for a crowd that predominantly listens to Dave Matthews' music (which I'm assuming you are), I think you're going to be faced with a lot of people thinking the same things we are here.
