hm. during the summer i played way longer then i should have every day... now i probably play like 45 minutes a day... no official practice time just jamming for fun... which might be why i've been able to get where i have.. i've been playing out of joy and fun and not because im supposed to practice.
i started with too much, then repunzle, then two step, then so much to say, went from there.

Hmmm.....well, how long have I been playing? I started during the summer of 1998, so I guess that's about 4 and 1/2 years. Jeez, it really doesn't seem that long. I CAN sing to most DMB songs but whether you want me to sing is a COMPLETLY different story. I have a terrible voice and I don't even mean terrible, I mean just flat out BAD. Oh well, no live shows for metomek322 wrote:first off i am really impressed at the guitar playing... and the question i have is: How long have you been playing for? and can you sing to all the songs that you play?

play time
funny, I've been playin' for just about the same amount of time. I guess I really started in the Fall of '98 - my freshman year at college. Bought my own guitar around X-mas of 2000 (I played my Dad's before that) Anyway, it takes practice to play the songs, it takes practice to sing the songs, it takes practice to do the two at once. And it takes even more practice to do it well. I've been practicing singing but I'm not happy with it. I can hit the notes most of the time, well almost, but when I try to sing louder I just lose it.
d'oh well
peace,
Ken

first of all, im really impressed that you learned dave's songs so fast. since 2001 youve been playing? ive been playing for over 4 years and i still havent learned all his songs, and i jam about 2 hours a day.
then again, i can hardly ever find tab for what i want, so...
anyhow, you really must have a natural talent for guitar. you'll be another tim reynolds someday, lol

i started with the hardest songs first- billies, rhym and reason, what would you say ones like those. the other ones were pretty easy after that. once you get a few songs under your belt, the learning curve goes WAY up. it took about a year or so to learm them all. at first it would take a few days per song, and then it got down to maybe less than a half hour. keep practicing and it will come soon

singin'
hum the trick i used to start singing dmb's songs was simple...
*tape yourself while singing
*listen to yourself...
yes its hard!!
*then tape yourself while playing the song
*listen again to your playing
*and then let it play a little while and sing on it
*finally play the tape where you are singing and play on it
my singing teacher also said: practice your breathing
inhale with your nose and exhale with your mouth
also, keep the air in your belly
well good luck y'all!!

I started playing in 99. After hearing Alice N Chains Unplugged and Dave & Tim L@LC I said, that is what I want to do. I knew nothing about playing guitar I just picked a guitar up, got a chord book and learned how to play tabs. It took me a lot longer to learn because I had nobody to show me things or teach me, but now I can play whole songs such as Tripping Billie’s, Stone, WWYS, Crash, Ants, Rhyme and Reason, Typical Situation, etc.....) It just takes practice, lots of it. Def. start off by working on your rhythm if you’re not feeling the music you can’t play the music with any kind of rhythm or feeling to it. It's a lot more then just plucking a bunch of strings. Also keep your hands relaxed and don’t concentrate so hard just know the riffs and play it after awhile you will start picking up on it. It is also real good practice to play along with Dave on a CD or a Video it def. helps with your timing.
Re: jkanter??? or whoever is playing on the videos...
Thanks everyone for replies. I was asking more out of curiosity... so i had a clue of the time line needed to play stuff as cleanly as jkanter... i've been playing for close to a year and i can play a lot of dave... i seem to pick up rhythm and strumming a ton faster than chord changes... i know some part to all the dave songs i want to play.... i now just want to learn the parts im missing and connect the two...tomek322 wrote:first off i am really impressed at the guitar playing... and the question i have is: How long have you been playing for? and can you sing to all the songs that you play?
