So Damn Lucky

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Strum pattern

Unread post by aubdmb » Thu Dec 21, 2006 3:49 pm

I've had trouble with this too...is it alternating up and down strumming or just one direction down (but fast)? I've tried watching the video but can't tell.

Thanks

To try and help you out, most of the sound you hear in the Verse guitar part is from hammer-ons, at least that's how I do it. It's tough to just let your fingers easily do it over and over again comfortably, but the strumming is mostly just up and down. Again, this is just the way I do it, but it sounds right.

Not easy at first

Unread post by djwhd28 » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:18 pm

I struggled with this one for a while, too. The easy part is that your strumming hand never changes speed. The difficult part is that the verse is in 3 and the chorus is in 4. This kind of change where the 3 turns into 4 (123123 123123 123123 123123 becomes 1234 1234 1234 1234 with the same eigth note value) without a temp0 change is called a metric modulation. That's what makes it tricky to figure out.

Watch the AOL sessions, it's the only one with the cleanest version that you can follow. And count against a metronome to get the beats right. That's the key to the strumming. 3 then 4.

Good luck.

Hi,

It's not the tempo I have a problem with.

E:----------------------------
B:----------------------------
G:-9h11--9--11--9--11--9--11--
D:-9------9--x---9--x---9--x---
A:-9h11--9--11--9--11--9--11--
E:-0-------0--0---0--0---0--0---

-----------------------------
-----------------------------
9h11---9--11--9--11--9--11--
9h11---9--11--9--11--9--11-- x2
0-------0--0---0--0---0--0---
-----------------------------

You can clearly hear him play the top E in both parts of the verse. So he must be barring the whole of the 9th fret. But my fingers don't bend that way. I cannot bar the whole of the 9th fret and have fingers on the 11th fret too. What do you reckon?

I had trouble with that also. Bar the ninth and hammer on with elen with pinky and ring finger....then practice, it took me awhile to get this one

I'll keep practicing.

Welcome to the world of Dave's fingers. On top of that you have to find a way to mute the B string while you're barring. This one takes practice, but when you get it it's one of the coolest riffs to play.
