Nail cutting injury!!

Unread post by hd28v » Sun Jan 19, 2003 6:40 pm

This is a really gay post but here it goes. Has anyone ever cut there "frethand" fingernails to short and it is impossible to play because it hurts to freakin bad. Well I did this mourning (not the firsttime) and I cant play today and it is pissing me off. Maybe I am the only one. Probably am. I wonder if Dave (since he plays live so oftet) takes extreme special care in cutting his nails since they are a necessity. Probably. Imagine him cancaling a shoe dut to careless fingernail clipping. ha--I will shupup now.

I've never cut them too short, but I've bit them too short a few times. and yeah it does hurt but they grow back fast enough.

i have the same problem, but with the other hand. i play without a pick, always. i do fingerpick a lot, but i also strum very percussively, so my pointer finger's nail is always bent and cut down very short. i feel your pain...all the time

I chew my fingernails really really really bad as far back as I can remember. I've chewed them pretty short on occation, but never to the point i can't play. Maybe it's stopped me for a few hours, but then I'm always back playing.

As for my right hand, I really need to stop chewing them so that I can strum with the fingernails like dave does on Everyday and WAYG. But with the short fingernails I get fragile cuticles. It hurts.

According to dictionary.com:

A Hangnail is "a small piece of dead skin at the side or the base of a fingernail that is partly detached from the rest of the skin" or "a loose narrow strip of skin near the base of a fingernail; tearing it produces a painful sore that is easily infected."

A ingrown nail is "when the nail grows into the flesh instead of over it -- usually affect the toenails, particularly the big toe. A damaged or improperly trimmed nail can become ingrown, burrowing into the skin at the side of the nail bed."

THis is probably more info then you wanted, but hell, it might come in handy sometime.

all I have to say is that ingrown toenails are quite possibly the single most debilitating and painful things on the face of the planet.

you said it, it gets to the point where you'd rather amputate then try to "weather the storm", so to speak.
