do you play the violin or cello? I have been playing since I was 8, and I couldn't possibly do half the things you just said and make them look easy.ColinMBurns wrote:Learn to play the instrument, listen to the songs to play by ear, and watch the DVDs and watch Boyd. It's not too hard.

I play the Cello. Have, off and on, for 11 years now. Maybe I have a good ear, but I can play rather easily by listening. And I can play violin at the equivalent to a 2nd grade reading level -- I can get by. My theory is that if you learn one: violin, viola, cello, the others come easily. It's the general idea. Guitar came easy on that basis.

i dont see the big problem with there being no frets. its like how after a while we dont need to look at the fretboard to know were on the right fret. we just get used to it and know our hands are there.
a good question though - whats the point of getting a fretless bass guitar? is there a sound difference?

Along the idea of no frets ---
I remember early on in my cello playing days, some kids had a problem with watching their left hand (the hand that would be on the "frets" of a cello). Some teachers would set up a block so the kids couldn't look at their left hand. Same with guitar, if you practiced long enough and made yourself NOT watch your left hand, you'd develop muscle memory that would allow you to not watch your hand. Make sense?

that doesn't make a lot of sense because you can hold down anywhere within the fret and the string will still make contact in only one spot. you have a half of inch of space to put your finger and still get the note right, not so with fretless instrumentsshane wrote:i dont see the big problem with there being no frets. its like how after a while we dont need to look at the fretboard to know were on the right fret. we just get used to it and know our hands are there.

Perhaps I failed to mention that for little kids, teachers will often put tape on the fret board of stringed instruments to act as guiders to where the notes are... Sort of like frets. Hard subject to explain by typing.fatjack wrote:that doesn't make a lot of sense because you can hold down anywhere within the fret and the string will still make contact in only one spot. you have a half of inch of space to put your finger and still get the note right, not so with fretless instrumentsshane wrote:i dont see the big problem with there being no frets. its like how after a while we dont need to look at the fretboard to know were on the right fret. we just get used to it and know our hands are there.

Bad as in no good? Or Bad is in "he's awesome!"?Beauford33 wrote:I really need proof why Boyd is so damn bad. I just dont get it, sorry to get off topic though.
I think he's pretty good -- he gets the job done and plays his stuff well.
Though, he's no Itzahk Pearlman and he doesn't have near the correct playing position and posture, he can still jam.

i know what you mean, but like fretted instruments, unfretted instruments go out of tuneColinMBurns wrote:Perhaps I failed to mention that for little kids, teachers will often put tape on the fret board of stringed instruments to act as guiders to where the notes are... No way. Boyd is great. "playing over the band"? like, too loud, drowns others out? think of it as, what would DMB sound like WITHOUT him? boring. he's a vital part. and most of the time he plays minimal parts in the songs, just backgroundBeauford33 wrote:no, a lot of people here bag on him a lot because he "plays over the band" or he is out of tune. I just dont get it. He is so awsome (granted I dont play violin) but yeah, he gets the job down with awsome to throw in it.
yeah, he's out of tune, sometimes. but as it's been said, violins/cellos/viola/basses all go out of tune REALLY easily, especially when you are playing outdoors, and really easily because of heat. most dave concerts are outside, in the heat, and under REALLY hot lights. do the math. give the guy some credit. he compensates and vibratos a lot, so you barely notice.
the dudes the man... he's what all of us classical instrument players want to be -- rocking with a bad ass rock band.
watch Nirvana Unplugged on MTV. there's a cello in a few songs... she rocks.
