41, Cortez, WWYS, and original

Unread post by Grasso » Wed Nov 29, 2006 2:26 pm

I finally got enough spare time to upload some stuff. I know i'm pretty new so noone's ever heard me before, so we'll see how this goes. I'll give you a little description of why i hate each recording :D

#41:

http://www.yousendit.com/download/YBbfmT0ckY95TA%3D%3D

Done in 1 full take + a take for the solo. I did the louder of the 2 guitar parts, and the solo at the end. My usual bass player played the quieter guitar part, and keyboard player did the vocals because he's way better than me. I play a Taylor 814ce, and the other acoustic is a Taylor 310ce. Shure condensers for the guitars and I'm not sure of the model, but i'm in love with it, a big gorgeous Shure vocal mic. I hit one wrong note in the solo but i liked the rest so much that i didn't bother redoing it.

Same Taylor 814, Violin player uses a Don Worwood "stradiverious" model (sp?) She's rediculously good but she isn't very confident in her solo ability, even though she's nasty. Bass is a 5-string Fender Jazz Bass, directly into the mixer. Drums are Ludwig, but the snare is different. He hated the snare in that recording so he bought a new one recently. I know the drums don't start correctly in the beginning, and the intro is rushed. We figured that out later. I sing lead vox, so don't hate, i know i suck. Backup is me 1x and keyboard player 2x. After the jam till the end is wrong because we were supposed to go into the "knock knock" part again but we, once again, didn't notice until we listened to the DMB recording. :? I had to play the solo during the jam because we don't have a sax and michelle, the violinist, didn't want to. (we have a nasty LIOG and Ants that she did, but they're huge studio quality audio files that i've never even heard of, so they're too big to upload, wait till i change them  ) I think that's all for that one.

EDIT: we lost time a little bit a couple times. It was hard playing to a metronome and still trying to have energy, so that's where the mess-ups came from.

Cortez:

Okay, i didn't know the Warren Haynes / Neil Young part, so i just played a solo in Em :? , whatever, i like it. Guitar is a POS Ibanez through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Wah is the Dunlop Hendrix model, and i use an Ibanez T-808 tube screamer for the slight OD. Dan the keyboard player and I switch off vox like Dave and Warren. He sang Warren's part, I did Dave's. i know we messed up the last part that starts "and i know she's livin there...." we thought it was a separate verse :? Same Taylor 814, Fender Jazz Bass, and drums.

Original: I Dream of Aubrey

http://www.yousendit.com/download/YBZgo ... h5TA%3D%3D

The song is about my relationship with a girl over the course of 3 years, but i took the whole literal meaning and switched it from love, to sailing, because i thought it would be more fun that way.

This isn't the finished cut, but it's all i have on my computer. The finished thing has a high harmony during the "so far from home.." part, and i play the open chords instead of the powerchords. The strumming is also more even and the song overall if more powerful during the chorus, but then it goes back into the verse. I'm a big fan of it that way. There's drums and Bass and all sorts of good stuff too. there's a shitty crossfade at the end where Dan kept running out of breath while he was singing and it sounds shitty when he comes in over himself, it's fixed in the final. Oh, and he hit a WAY sharp note in the first chorus, we fixed that too. :D

If there's any questions, let me know, and i definatly want to see what everyone thinks. :D

you have a good voice. good progression, sounds like a colin hay song, but that's not an insult. you have a good strong voice though, not afraid to let it go, i lvoe that.

i like it man. i just think you need to do some chord work. your voice is good, your recording is solid, but power chords will only get you so far. and not saying that you only write in power chords cause this is the only song i've heard, but unless you're goign to use distortion and a great drummer, the power chords will get old.

overall, it's pretty good man. i enjoyed it. great livelyhood to the song if that makes sense. keep it up. sorry i'm not commenting on the covers. i've heard dave covers too much, so i basically stick to the originals now.

i was gonna post this almost word for word, minus the comment about the progression and i was gonna add a line about envy of your voice.

i too am not listening to the covers, this is a nice original.

i would even just try making the chorus open chords and using some more variation in your dynamics. this is a very good song tho. i really like the writing, you have a way with words.

keep postin the originals.

I actually did play open chords in the chorus, when we re-recorded it, but it was a half step higher. That version is a C#, G#, B, F# and the final cut was D, A, C, G....so that way there was open chords that i could play. i'll post it when i get ahold of it. thanks for the input fellas
