Me in College Big Band- Chick Corea's "Spain"

Unread post by Cor » Fri Nov 17, 2006 1:16 am

We had our first recital a few weeks ago. I figured I'd post a tune from it. Nothing spectacular and the band made a very big error right at the beginning of the song, but it was fun and I really liked the arrangement.

Plus, I had a solo in it towards the end. :P

I have 6 other tunes if people actually enjoy listening to this one.

Enjoy.

There are some parts in here where I'm just critiquing- this is somewhat unintentional. I'm just talking jazz here.

Listening to it right now. I absolutely hated playing this song, maybe because I was a weak bass player during it's short lived life in our cycle and our jazz band was particularly bad. We had similiar arrangements (then again, can't really imagine a whole lot of a variation in arrangements for this song, right? :P)

I love the trumpet solo section- good trumpet work really astonishes me. The tone from the trumpet section is amazing (overall though, the horns could definately be a bit tighter).

Your solo is very solid. I wish the piano and drums could comp you better on some of your different rhythmic runs- they seem just too focused on keeping straight up time.

I do remember that melody part being particularly hard on my four string- how is it on guitar?

What other songs did you play? I may be interested in listening to some others.

Thanks for listening, man, I'm glad someone did.

I was pretty pumped to play this song because I love the original version. Arrangement was pretty dramatic, but it was fun.

I do agree the horns could be tighter. There are two bands here, Jazz Central (what you listned to) and Jazz Lab 1. Central is like the JV band and Lab is like the varsity band. Lab just kills it, but yeah, we are sloppy on the horns in general.

Sometimes I do feel like the rhythm section wasn't active enough during the solos ya know? Like, just jamming along on the progression, and not interacting enough. This happened with me and other soloists.

The melody isn't that tough, but I knew it before, since I learned Corea's orignal version awhile ago. It's not too bad, of course, the timing is just so damn weird.

Other songs we played-
Blues and the Abstract Truth
Ya Gotta Try
Caravan
Tribute to Miles (medley of So What, All Blues, Seven Steps to Heaven, Milestones)
Big Dipper
Look for the Silver Lining

I'd be glad to upload them for you. It's good to find another jazz fan here who likes to hear something besides Dave covers.

Thanks again for listening, man.
