I'll Back You Up
Just wanted to know if everyone has fallen in love with this song whether it is due to the lyrics, how it is played, its meaning, etc? I had heard it once or twice a while ago and wasn't enthused about it. I listen to it now, and it makes me wanna cry because I just can't get it to sound quite right. The song is beyond awesome

Fatjack, do you have any emotion other than bitterness and anger? Not to pick on you, but do you have any emotion that deals with longing or lament? I apologize for the mild harangue, but I thought that you would not like IBYU. I guess I was hoping for the best.
Anyway, I guess to make this song have a special sentiment you would have to be in some type of relationship that would keep you away from the person you really wanted to be with. Maybe not everyone has had that, but if you had, music always helps to either recongize that others feel the same. But your opinion is up to you. If you don't like it so be it. I haven't a problem with it.

yes i have plenty of emotions besides resentment and anger, but this song just doesn't do it for me. its obvious it was the first song he wrote because it shows his lack of creativity at the time. to me, its just a BORING song. nothing interesting about it. i can see why other people might like it, but i just dont, plain and simple.PlayLikeDave wrote:Fatjack, do you have any emotion other than bitterness and anger? thanks for the blatant accusations about my lack of emotion. i dont see why everyone around here has to assume that im so emotionless robot because i dont like certain dave songs. i express my opinion and get attacked for it just because it is slighty negative. did i come out and just say "hey this song blows and anyone who listens to it is stupid"? NO, i didn't. i expressed my opinion in a very balanced way without saying something bad about someone else. i feel that its really unfair that i get attacked in this manner for just expressing my opinion.
i just ask that everyone think before they start making assumptions about me and consider that although my opinion may be different, it is no less valid than anyone else's.
peace to you as well

I agree, personally. I dont understand the infatuation with this song. Its just never appealed to me, and I dont like the hook. ("I'll back you up.") Its not that I think its necessarily a bad song, but I dont think it deserves as much yaya as everyone gives it.fatjack wrote:i never have liked this song, i dont see what's so special about it...
...And I'm sort of failing to see the bitterness or anger in Josh's response. It looks to me like he just doesnt like the song.

I duno what it is. Maybe I just expected everyone to actually see the rawness of the song. Dave was probably very young when he wrote it, and he was just coming into know everything that he had or didn't have at the time. You are right Fatjack, this song is somewhat basic. There is nothing flashy about it, and to people it might be boring. I can understand. It is just a very simple but pure song.
I apologize if it was offensive to ask about your emotion. It just seems that everytime someone brings up anything about relationships or anything slightly emo, you despise it. But who knows you better than yourself. So I can only apologize for making "blatant accusations" which kinda implies that I made statements, and I really just asked questions...that is all besides the point. Like I said b4, your opinion is yours, and if you don't like the song, I haven't a problem with it.

that wasn't so much directed just at you, just kinda letting off steam cuz of a lot of other people doing similar things that was actually a little worse.PlayLikeDave wrote:I duno what it is. Maybe relationships was a bad word. I was trying to keep it unisex for those board-goers that are not male (ie Sarah), but there were a couple of threads where your remarks were not pro-women or girl friends or something to that effect. I think that it definitely involved saying F*** something (I apologize for the childishness in saying this, but I do my best to not use foul language).
But if you don't despise relationships, I apologize. I am accustom to sticking my foot in my mouth. So if you haven't said anything like above, I apologize, and do forgive. It is not fair to assume.

i never said anything like that, the only thing i can think of like that was when matty boom said "fuck love" or "love doesn't exist". i argued against that point. i never said anything 'anti-girfriend'PlayLikeDave wrote:Maybe relationships was a bad word. and if thats not proof enough, the Sarah that you mentioned could be considered having a relationship with me (perhaps even girlfriend, but that title is up to her)

Good stuff Mr. Kavanaugh. I apologize. I guess I read something the wrong way. But hope things work out for the best.
But still I must say, I greatly appreciate "I'll Back You Up". And btw, about my other post about a DMB Masterpiece, I think that "The Dreaming Tree" is quite a good choice.

I also agree. I think it is sort of boring. nothing really hooks you in during the whole song. Very plain, very inimaginitave, too me, that is.mbgreen wrote:I agree, personally. the song would be boring if it werent for that little transition part...once you got that down, it's fuckin sweet to play. that's the hook part of the song I think....and then you got the slide into the transition which is extremely sweet... but yeah, I rarely play this song/seek up/STJL/Cry freedom/Proudest Monkey, not that they are bad songs, I just never really enjoyed them. especially seek up, IMO that one is so boring compared to the rest. THAT song is so overrated...I mean, yeah, so it talks about not being greedy or whatever...who gives a shit, the riff and melody are boring IMO.
