Recording Interface question

Unread post by BenPezzner » Mon Nov 13, 2006 7:14 pm

I want to go ahead with this next piano medley but I'm having issues with my interface. It's only got one 1/4" input, and one XLR input. I want to record in stereo so I got an adapter for the XLR input but the sound arrives all muddy. I believe it's time to purchase a new interface.

So....

Question: Does anyone have any suggestions on an interface? It has to have a digital input, and I'd like it to be under $200, if possible. I'd also prefer USB over Firewire. I was thinking of this one: (the Alesis I/O2)

Thanks!
Ben

What do you mean when you say it needs to have a digital input? Are you running an external preamp and analog to digital converter? If so, do you need the digital on optical or coaxial or otherwise?

Whether this is the case or not, check out the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. It has stereo XLRs in, along with digital in on coax. It has fair mic pres in it too. Its street price is right at $200.

Let me know if you need any more help. I'm not 100% sure if I understand what you're looking for.

Ya, look into the Maudio stuff, there is a lot to choose from. They are great protools compatable rigs and a good investment if you don't have enough to drop on the mbox or 002. Another option would be to keep what you have and buy a little mixer that has a mono out and mix levels on the mixer then send it mono to your computer, although it might be a better idea just to go ahead and invest in a new interface with a better preamp.

So would you recommend the M-Audio Fast Track Pro over the Alesis IO/2? I ask because the Alesis is $50 cheaper and they both seem like they'd work for me.

I'd recommend the M-Audio because their products are just generally better than Alesis's.

I second that, friends of mine have had lots of problems with Alesis stuff and the majority of the M-audio stuff I have heard has sounded better also.
