strumming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Unread post by SPOTLIGHT5584 » Tue Nov 07, 2006 12:23 pm

ok so Does Dave strum every song even when its one note? I hear sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't....When he does strum hitting one note how does he mute the other strings or does he even do that?

no he doesn't strum everything.

There are certain chords where he is only hitting two or three notes, and in that case he is muting, but individual notes he doesn't.

thanks its so annoying sometimes...Im not good at tuneing out other instruments to hear just what he is doing....it is much easier to hear him when its only dave and tim but its still hard to say sometimes. I have only been playing about 10 months now. My pinky finally moves more on its own and my strumming is hell of a lot better than it was 10 months ago but I am not where I want to be yet heh but I guess no one is really.

a more accurate question will probally yeild more accurate answers,

give examples,
Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"

example - LIOG Verse each single note is not strummed but he moves his hand like its strummed so sometimes I think hes muteing but it is all confusing. I can play the song fine its just the question of whether he does it muting or just picking each note and it just makes me crazy because of how me moves his hand to look like he strums.

All strumming.

If you count the song in 4/4, the downstrums are on the eightnotes. You have to mute the rest of the strings.

Get good at, when you strum (for example) an open A major chord, you don't hit the low E. What you are practicing by doing this is going through the motion of a full strum but not hitting all the strings.

Then, what you have to do for LIOG, is mute the strings below the one you are playing the note on, using the finger you are using to play the note with. Your fingertip hits the fretboard, and the rest of your finger is slightly off the fret board, muting the strings.

I hope that isn't confusing.
