The Stone

Hey,

I've been playing guitar little over 7 months now. And, I think, I'm able to play a couple of Dave Matthews songs. The Stone, was acutally the first song I ever heard of Dave Matthews and it was the song that made me decide to pick up the guitar. Now with that being said, I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the song. The intro part, in the video, which is helpful by the way, is just too fast, and i can't seem to get the timing right.

Can anyone help me out with this, cause I really want to play this, but I can't get the timing right, and I don't want to shortcut it, cuz thats never the answer.

hey man, just keep at it. one way that will help is to do it at half speed for awhile. it gets old but once you can do it comfortably while watching tv and having a conversation, you can speed that bad boy up and keep on. itll happen one day. youll be watching the simpsons and youll realize you are playing the stone w/o thinking about it.

if you are having problems w/ the rythm then just do the same until it sounds like it should, just slower.

if you are doing the dave strum/mute/pick then really keep at it. if you are picking it then you may put the pick down and use the tips of your fingers as a pick (put your thumb and index together as if holding a pick but use nails instead). this helped me w/ the up-picks until i got better at using a pick.

i hope some of this can help. i know it sucks to just hear "practice and practice" but thats a biggy i 'spose.

thanks for the reply, i figured I was going to get something like that. However, I just having trouble get the timing, like, if someone had the program Power Tab or Guitar Pro, someone could tab it for me full speed, and i can manipulate the tempo, so i can build up to it. I know its asking a lot from someone, but it could really help me out, but...until than, practice, practice, practice

good deal. well, i do not have any of those cool programs but im sure someone does around here. also, i bet somebody has some good pointers, covers, and stuff. come morning, they will come out of the woodwork. good luck man

well....you get those programs,
you can get the power tab editor program from
http://www.powertabs.net
that will lead u to a website with lots of power tabs, if you go to links however, you'll find a link the the powertab editor website, and you can download that one from there

Gutiar Pro, well you have to buy that one, or.....use others forms of piracy such as ie. Kazaa, but it will save you $100

So you can now have those programs, and maybe help me out here

just listen to a d&t show over and over and over while playing along. learn the fingerings and practice, practice, practice. guitar playing isn't easy, you have to work at it.....so go to work!

whom ever posted that tab on mysongbook.com for the stone, thank YOU soooooo much, now i can learn how to play it cause i can slow it down and build up.

In my opinion, The Stone requires just as much skill, if not more, out of the strumming hand as it does the playing hand. Be sure to focus on both.
