probably not right before shows...but probably when he's bored he still does...almost guaranteed.
shit i hope so
he is boys with willie nelson, enough said. farmaid is one big session.
Yeh, it's amazing he can even play a set, I'm sure they're all gettin' pretty fucked up before Farmaid.

But this topic has been discussed a million times. (And yes, I unfortunately started a thread about this too when I was a noob, i must admit). I'm sure he does, he jokes around about it all the time. But like someone said before, probably not before shows, at least with the band. It seems like the rest of the band is pretty straight when it comes to shows, and probably wouldn't be too happy if he was fuckin' up all the time cause he was under the influence and couldn't concentrate.

I like jamming while stoned but I would never do it for a live performance

I'm sure this has been said a thousand times on here, but was dave a heroin addict? Some of my friends said he was, and knowing that he was a hippie and writing songs like Billies makes me think so as well.

Rhyme and Reason would be the real give away if he ever did.

I don't think he could have been a heroin addict....But he (probably/might have) tried it.

if you watch the VH1 driven, they show a really old clip of him playing WWYS, he definitely looks like a heroin addict there, not saying he was but he looks creepy.

cincydave what part of cincy are you in?

I'm not sure, it was in a cup. I would imagine whatever beer they had there. (Miller, Bud... I can't remember any of the others)

I make this argument all the time. Professional musicians like the guys in DMB are professionals, they don't work fucked up. Has Dave and the rest of the band ever been drunk or high on stage, I'm sure. You don't achieve megastardom and stay atop your lofty perch by being a fuck up on stage.

This I maintain is one of Dave's best bits, he appears to be fucked up when he's really not.

Daves a goofy guy and it throws a lot of people off in regards to drug use I think. He is bright, intelligent and a decent guy from what we know so I would be inclined to say the hard drugs have been used but are in the past. Billies was admited to be written about an acid trip (literally in this case, he fell down a hill while on acid). I would say he does pot on a somewhat regular basis. When he came out to introduce Soulive in TO last winter he seemed baked. Maybe he gets high before that and is good to go by the time the band comes on.

Just a little FYI Dave has stated that Billies is about an acid trip that he had in South Africa when he was younger. Billies are what police officers are called in South Africa and apparently some "billies" did acid with him. I think that's been around the boards a couple of times but I also read it somewhere online in an interview he did ... let me see if I can find it to verify.

I think him and some friends tripped out on a beach and dave fell down a hill (hence trippin') and someone said the song sounded like hillbillies on acid (billies).
