First time poster - seems like a good thread to jump in on. A few things to consider on this:
-in general, you will get a better guitar for the money with Taylor than with Martin. Even Taylor's cheapest line play great; not so with Martin.
-Taylors are also pretty consistent, which is why a lot of touring guitarists use them. If their Taylor gets broken, lost, stolen, ect. they can pop into the nearest decent guitar store for a replacement and know that it's going to play just about identically to the one they had. Again, I don't think this is the case with Martins. This probably isn't important to most of us who sit at home and play though.
Great board. Looking forward to reading more.

The first logical post in this thread. I'm a martin kind of guy but 714's are awesome guitars.DaveyeahMatthews wrote:taylor. martins are loud and are cool, but taylors have the sound i am looking for. i will never stop loving my 714ce
To whoever said you get you get more bang for your buck with taylors, an HD-28 is alot cheaper than a 914, for example.

You could say that the D-28 is cheaper than the 914, but the comparison depends on what guitars you think are of the same caliber.
Somone else might think that the D-28 is only worthy of the 714 (just an example), because neither is their respective brands' top model.
Both brands have their wicked expensive models (the D-50 and up for martin, the Presentation series for Taylor) but other than those, there's really no watermark to judge one off of the other, except for the prices. and Martin has way too many obscure little model to get an accurate comparison to one of the few Taylor models.

Haven't played a ton of Martins, but I love the clarity and snappiness (is that a word?) you get with Taylors. I wouldn't trade my 914 for a room full of Martins. Even DM3MD's. Haha. Like someone posted earlier though, it's all about the sound you're looking for. I think we can agree that Taylors and Martins sound different, and from there, its up to the individual. Just my .02
