Grey Street....some questions...

Unread post by NeoLP314 » Thu Sep 21, 2006 10:51 pm

Ok so I jus finished everlong...sounds pretty god to me....next song on the list is grey street...now my questions...

1. Ok I did do a search on grey street on this site, and for the hand positioning it said for:
7xx7 it says use pinky and ring finger
4xx3 use middle and index
6xx5 use pinky and ring
And so on....

But y use that type of fingering if u have to switch up all the time, doesn't that make it more complicated?...y not jus stick with two fingers?

2. And IF you do use jus two fingers...which two are the BEST or easiest to use?

3. And for the chorus I need exact hand positioning, because I'm clueless as to where I'm supposed to be on the chorus....I know its Bm, but ima need a bit more help than that...

That's it....for now......hope u wonderful people here at DMB can help me!!

Thanks in advance

I use two fingers and just use the most comfy for me. and It's just Am form Bm barcord. then open chords for the rest of the chords.

I think it's mainly because of the fact that it's how Dave plays it. He uses the same kind of fingering for billies and the LIOG jam (same chords). Maybe its good because you can change chords without having to move your whole hand a lot. Not really sure...

I think it's also to decrease the sound of your fingers sliding across the strings and making that high pitched squeak.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": "I once saw this in a movie, it was about a bus that had to keep it's "speed" above 50, and if it's "speed" dropped, it would explode...I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down"!

1. it says that, because basically, if you watch Dave play the song, thats how he plays them. I've been playing that song (and others) for about a year now, and I think I play them pretty well, and I'm only just learning to play them the EXACT same way he does, for instance; I can't play the 7xx7 chord with my pinky and ring finger, I play it with my index and ring finger, but I play the rest like it says there, it's just very hard, if you haven't been trained to play with your pinky from a young age, as I wasn't, to play with it...I know it's a kind of long winded answer, but you get what I'm trying to say right?

2. I play the Bm, and then play the x4222x chord with my index, and the 4th with my ring finger, but it's best to use whatever fingers you feel most comfortable using.

hope I was of SOME help to you.

if you get the technique down it is actually a more efficient use of motion. personally i think it sounds better and it is easier to mute the a and d strings more effectively. however, there is no set way to play these songs and you can/should play them however you are comfortable at the time.

the chords have more of a chopy sound than a sliding sound , i started with 2 fingers than moved on to all four , i say start with 2 fingers until you get the chords and sound down right then try switching .

I play the song accrodingly to daves style, so in this case its the pinky and ring for me. I like to play the chorus differently though. I play the bm and then go up to an A chord shaped: x07650 and then i slide up to the D at: xx0775 and then down to the G. I gives more of a ring to the song when playing solo and its also easier to go back into the verse from the A. I totally love grey street for sure.
I've found its much easier to learn daves songs exactly the way he plays them, there is a method to his madness! Its the rhythms that get me not the fingering.
