So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Im New

Unread post by jskrub » Wed Sep 20, 2006 4:05 pm

Hey, I'm new to dmbtabs.com!! I started playing guitar (electric) when I was 11 where I mostly played rock/metal. I somewhat fell off the whole guitar/rock music scene around 16 where I sold my guitars for turntables. Yea big mistake.. didn't take me long to get bored with the non-sense that is involved in that whole djing scene. I'm 24 now and just got an acoustic and have been just screwin around trying to remember old songs. I have never took lessons..mostly self taught (also read tab). I have been a dm fan for over 10 years and always wanted to try and play like him. So what better time than now right?!?! Well, his style is very unorthodox and I'm having a hard time trying to get chords down...any advice?

DMBTabs, welcome to it...

My advice is to start with some of his easier songs (i.e., Halloween, Grey Street, Two Step, Granny etc.) to get a feel for the type of chords he uses. When you get comfortable with his chord shapes other songs get easier. And, of course, practice, practice, practice!

Welcome!

As you can imagine, that topic has been discussed throughout a lot of threads here. Just do a quick search for "easiest Dave songs" and you'll find some nice suggestions.

I started with Ants Marching and #41. Just try to mess around with Live At Luther College...

Good luck man!

#41 is hard if you have small hands/fingers and cant do that 7547 and x7548 chords :( But yeah one of the best songs to start out with IMO is Satellite

Welcome.

I can sort of agree with playing Satellite, but the stretch tends to hurt when you first start out, since I don't know too many artists that use such a stretch for such a long duration in a song. But once you find yourself remembering the fret order, it gets alot easier.

The first song I learned was Granny, but I'd been playing for a couple of months when I did. I'd also suggest looking at Grey Street once you're use to his chord-style, as well as I found Christmas Song to not be too hard.

I would definetely start with Satellite. When I first started playing it I could feel the back of my hand cracking. It took about a week before I could play the entire intro. But after that, Songs like: Tripping Billies, 41, etc. became a lot easier because I was used to the long/er stretches.

The stretching is no problem because I have huge hands but I have fat long fingers (sausage links I call 'em) which kind of screws things up at times. I pretty much got down SMTS, Tripping Billies, Two Step, Crash, Granny, and a little bit of Jimi Thing. I guess I need to just practice, practice...oh yea some more practice.

If you pretty much got those songs down, what kind of advice are you looking for then?

I have a problem with my finger placement with dave's cords. Which finger to use with which etc.. I fake myself out and think about it way to much.

Did you go here off of the main page? That might help explain things better.

Yea, I checked out all those lessons and it helped a bit. I never played chords quite like that so it's something challenging for me now. I'm sure with some hardcore practice I can pretty much master it.
