akachronic go here (#41 and Say Goodbye)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

akachronic go here (#41 and Say Goodbye)

Unread post by borocks » Mon Nov 17, 2003 10:00 am

So I put up two videos for you dude

First is #41: intro, short part of the 1st verse into 1st chorus and a short part of the 2nd verse.
I think it shows every part of the song. As for the chorus I played an alternate way (G=3-5-x-4, D=10-12-x-11, C=8-10-x-9 ). It's easier than Dave's way but sounds good as well.

Then Say Goodbye: Intro (pretty crappy), first verse of L@LC and the first chorus. I added the b-string on the 3rd fret to the first two chords of the chorus to give it a bit fuller sound.

Tell me if this helps.

Peace, Boris

Hey borocks,

Those are sweet. I'm actually working on both of those songs right now(when I get tired or frustrated with one, I switch to the other) :) Those are some REALLY nice clips, especially #41. Great work! I really appreciate it! :)

hey boris, good job on the videos. i just thought id let you know, you're playing a regular D in the chorus and dave plays a F#/D thingy.

Code: Select all

Chorus
E:-------------
B:-------------
G:-4---2----9--
D:-x---x----x--
A:-2---x----7--
E:-3---2---\8--
           (2)
you played

no biggie since both are a form of D, just thought id let you know, good job on the videos :D

yeah, you're certainly right, but as I said, it's an alternate way to play it and it sounds good to me.

Thanx though

ok, so i'm trying to figure out the strumming on the intro. The first 3 "chords" sound like it's the same pattern.

Something like hit note on E,
up, down, up, down(hard),
hit the note on the E, then down(hard)?

Is that right Bo?

Also, that last progression sounds pretty much the same strumming pattern too... just that there are chord changes.

Is that the right strumming?

I really appreciate the help/videos man.

yeah that's the basic idea I think. I actually never write down stumming pattern, I just stumm so that it sounds good to me. But you're right. In the end you can add a very quiet down/up

bass note, up, down, up, down(hard), down(stroke the top strings only), down(hard), down (quiet), up (quiet).

But don't focus too much on that stuff, try always alternate ways to play it and experiment with it...
and my best tip, keep your right hand moving!

you rock borocks!

just started with #41, and kinda got down the verse part (sloppily since i've only been playing the guitar for about a month now) and had no clue about the chorus part.

this video definitely helps! thanks man!

btw, looks like in the verse part you use either you index or middle finger to mute the D sting.

is that right?

yeah you lay the appropriate finger over the strings to mute those which are not supposed to ring.

I did it like Dave. You can see that pretty clearly in the Woodstock video, the Letterman Show, at Listener Supported or at any other #41 performence.

How do you play the chorus? Like me or like Dave?
I don't know... I used to play it like Dave for a while put didn't like it that much

Peace, Boris

I've been thinking about trying the second chorus chord as a full D/F#, 2xx232. I'm in class and don't have my guitar with me, but I'd imagine solo it would sound fuller. I hate the 2xx2xx and 87x9xx chords anyways.

As far as the intro, it can be fiddled with a whole lot. Sometimes I'll individually pick the notes from low E to G on the first chord, sometimes I strum lazily... for how Dave plays it, I'd listen to L@LC. Try and throw in the album intro before! ;)

I play 2xx23x for the second chorus chord...kinda a compromise :)
