Johnny Cash cover- "Cocaine Blues"

Unread post by tjmac66pc » Wed Sep 13, 2006 11:53 am

Hi everyone,

Here is a Johnny Cash cover that i did yesterday for one of my demo CD tracks. You may have to patiently click on the play button 2 or 3 times to get it going. Hope you enjoy!

I like it, I'll have to get you the link of my friend's band doing this live, it's a little different but really cool, very energetic.

Any tips on getting Johnny Cash's rhythm right. I can't seem to quite get a feel for a good rhythm when I try to play his songs and it really bugs me.

Edit: BTW, I think you do an awesome job with this cover. Do you do any other covers by Johnny?

thanks guys...

it took me a while to get the rhythm for Johnny Cash songs...this one in particular, is just constant semi-fast strumming with a percussive beat.. tough to explain, but i just listened to the song a gazillion times and played it until it sounded similar...strumming hand really has to be very relaxed and loose..

i'm pretty sure i originally found the tab from http://www.chordie.com

you don't even need it though... there are only three chords in the song

C & G for the whole song

and then C, F, & G for the final line of the song...

i added the intro, cuz i wanted to make it sound like the Folsom Prison rendition

E---0--1--2----------- ===>right into the C chord (verse)[/url]

Cash's part is very simple in this song. C (on the beat w/the drums, you can hear it), then G, then G then hit the C chord and stop then it's a little bass lead in or a guitar lead in like written above.

It's important to remember that there are two guitars (at least) in Cash's band. Also, try putting a dollar bill around the strings intervwoven around the 10th fret it gives you a very train like and percussive sound.
