The Stone, The Dreaming Tree, Spoon
hmm, id have to agree with you on dreaming tree and spoon, but am gonna put you never know in front of the stone
edit: damn, bartender has some great lyrics as well
See, it's too hard to do that. (I say Stone, Pig, Bartender) He IS a great song writer for that reason. There's way to many good songs to choose from.
Captivating millions of fans with his guitar and lyrics.... I don't know what you all would call that but I think he is going to go down as one of the best ever.

yes, he has for one a very unique style which contributes a lot to him being a good song writer. he has a lot of catchy tunes without them being annoying or terribly simple. a lot of his earlier lyrics with a few of his newer ones are amazingly in depth and just great poetry. I didn't read this whole thread but if spoon was not mentioned it should be. but really this explanation is too long so I will sum it all up in 4 words.

I put "yes" I think his lyrics are great in some songs, good on others, and not so good on some fewer ones.
But a song is NOT only lyrics, songs with a lot less depth and content have made it really far. (i.e: Black Eyed Peas).

you can have great lyrics. you can be a great musician. but a great songwriter blends the two. dave is this epitomized.

Lyrically i love Trippin Billies, The Stone, and with no doubt The Best of Whats Around
I think dave is up there as one of the best songwriters but i dont think he will be remembered like dylan was. his guitar riffs and lyrics that he came up with were just amazing. as soon as i heard him play LIOG i was like i want to play guitar and learn that song. the stuff he is writing now isnt so great in the guitar but his lyrics i think are still good.

I love his lyrics. One day I'm going to print them all out and make a nice book out of it. That's probably illegal I'm guessing... but I wouldn't sell it-- just for personal use.

I had to go with no on this. Is he a good songwriter? yes. But great, no. I don't think he is anywhere near the top tier of greatest songwriters of all time. He's probably not even in the top five in the last twenty years.
Flame away.
