You just have to listen to the recording and practice. It might take you some time to get the speed out of your right hand. But it's pretty nice to learn and play, especially if you have a band to play with...

Good luck man!

Drop D means your low E string should be a D. You can do this but tunning using the 7th fret instead of the 5th on the lowest string. When tunned, it should sound like the 4th string (which is also a D...).

And yeah, it makes A LOT of difference.

Anyway, get used to Drop D, it's pretty used...

i.e. with an A powerchord, dont play it with your index on 5 and your ring barring both 7's. play it with your ring and pinky.

and btdubs, tune with the SEVENTH fret for drop d... otherwise you're gonna pop your e and be mad at sfmartins.

I'll say it right now, the pinky is the key to this song, it NEVER leaves the fretboard

Code: Select all

Pre-Chorus
e:------------------------------------------
b:------------------------------------------
g:-6-6-6-7-7-7-9-9-9111111-12-12-12---------
d:----------------------------------7-7-7-7-
a:-4-4-4-5-5-5-7-7-7-9-9-9-10-10-10-7-7-7-7-
D:----------------------------------7-7-7-7-
that part should be

Code: Select all

Pre-Chorus
e:--------------------------------------------------------
b:--------------------------------------------------------
g:-6-6-6-7-7-7-9-9-9--11--11--11--11--11/12\11-----9-9----
d:-------------------------------------------------7-7--
a:-4-4-4-5-5-5-7-7-7---9---9---9---9---9-/10\-9----7-7
D:-------------------------------------------------7-7-

and near the end just do the same thing 3x

Code: Select all

e:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
g:-6-6-6-7-7-7-9-9-9-11-11-11-11--11/12\11----6-6-6-7-7-7-9-9-9--11--11--11--11--11/12\11--
d:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a:-4-4-4-5-5-5-7-7-7-9--9--9--9---9/10\9------4-4-4-5-5-5-7-7-7---9---9---9---9---9-10-9---
D:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you could throw in your pinky on the 11th fret of the G string (like on the normal version) to make it sound like 2 guitars

Code: Select all

e-----------
b-----------
g--9---11--9
d--11--11--11
a--9---9---9
d--0---------
i place my index finger on the 9th fret of the A string, ring on 11th d string ...middle on 9th fret on the G string...and my pinky for the 11th fret on the G...

then you use your index (9th fret on the D,still fretting on the A) or your thumb for the bass ...ala john mayer

i play it like that because it hurts my girly fingers to do it the "easier" way

i dont have my guitar infront of me, but from what i remember it is virtually all downstrumming. get the rhythym with your right palm muting and slight left hand muting.
this is a really cool song. to learn cause it is easy to sing to and sounds good by yourself, at a party, or wherever.

if you want more recomendations for some good drop D songs to play while you are learning this one let us know.

cheers.
