this is what I was thinking too... but for some reason I don't think that's the answer my guitar instructor is looking for... could be though

doesn't it have something to due with the right tension on the neck too. I could be just pulling that out off my ass but i thought i read that somewhere.

Standard tuning has evolved to provide a good compromise between simple fingering for many chords and the ability to play common scales with minimal left hand movement.

I bet there are mathematical explainations to the tuning as well... App said he had a friend who figured out which tuning would be best with little music knowledge. :shock:
