Stay Or Leave - Raised B Tuning

Hey Everyone!

I'm stoked this is the first time I'm posting on DMBtabs.com. Last year I made a beautiful transition in my life by picking up an acoustic Seagull 6 String. For years I'd always let people know that I wanted a guitar but every birthday and christmas went by with no guitar so finally I said "eff it all, I'm buying a guitar" and life has been great since! I look at this like you're in high school and you think you're in love and then one day when you're older you meet the real love of your life and get married, have kids etc etc etc followed by some living happily ever after. Sure sometimes you fight but in the end it all works out beautifully. That's what I view my love of music as before, just high school puppy love and now after being able to play and it opens music up that much more (duh!) Wow, talk about a greater appreciation for musicians and what music does for one's inner self.

My buddy who started playing about 8 months before me recently clued me in on this site and I'm stoked, can't wait for DVD's. Anyways, that's my icebreaking.

Now, for the question at hand. Can someone tell me how to tune a guitar in Raised B? I thought i could figure it out until my A string snapped and scraped my face. Sweet! Anyways, I lost my train of thought because I'm at work and someone just came to talk to me and now I'm brain dead.

Can someone hook me up with that tuning...

I can't help ya with the tuning, but the capo on 7 sounds pretty good and is a lot easier!

Just use a capo unless you have a backup guitar.. 7th fret will due..

i can't find the link right now, but there is a page here that says how to tune up to raised b. i think its more trouble than its worth, unless you have an extra guitar. from what i remember, you remove the low e string totally, then move each string up. so the A string is the base instead of the low E. then you have to buy another b string and put that as the highest sting.

like everyone else said, just capo at the 7th fret

7th fret capo...for sure. I broke three strings thinking I was doing something wrong. BUT - if you do still want to, remove the Bass E and move all the strings up one. Buy another B and put it at high E. Or continue to tighten the hell out of your strings but buy some goggles.

Obviously relative to the capo, most of this is easy except that damn 8, 9 & 10 fret junk. With capo at the 7th wouldn't you need to have a hand the size of the empire state building to really play this chord? Does anyone know of something to play in this chords place? Thanks again everyone..

that's just a c maj chord if im not mistaken (i don't have my guitar on me) so relative to the capo, you could either just play a C or play the C barre chord on the A string if you want that barred sound too.

yeah, to tune to raise B, you need to have different gauges of strings set up to play raised B.

I tuned my extra guitar to raised b tuning and its cool. Some songs sound cool on it since its so high of a sound. Its not too hard to tune it that high, you just need to do it slowly so as to not break the strings, especially when you just put them on and they still need to stretch. I have had 3 of them break from retuning them, since just like a standard they do go out of tune over time. I haven't noticed anything bad happen to my guitar, warping etc. It does suck when the strings break making it kinda worthless to do it. I don't know if I'll be keeping mine in raised b if the strings keep breaking, but it was cool to try out and gave my old guitar some more use. Don't play it much now that I have my Taylor 214

I used a set of Elixer Polyweb Lights by accident and replaced one of the broken ones with a set of Nanoweb Custom Lights. So far so good.

Thanks Taylordb... glad to be here. It's cool for a change to really be able to talk about the music. My pre-guitar days I found myself on some boards talking about the music from a listening perspective. I'm glad I picked up a guitar and can now really talk about the music knowing first hand how or learning how to play something. Puts a new appreciation into feeling the music and being able to talk about it. Definitely glad to have found a community of folks to talk about the tunes... Sssuuweeet
