Much Respect to the Crew at DMBTABS.com
This is my first post...just wanted to extend my thanks to the guys behind this site. I'm an old school guy (used to run the Blue Water Baboon Farm for all you guys older than 25...you may remember). If we'd have had a site like this back in the Minarets days, there would have been a lot less shitty Dave covers.
Keep up the great work! It's fantastic to see the community have developed so well over the years!

Baboon Farm
Yeah, I was crazy back in the day. I went through a very strange phase when the band really got embraced by the mainstream...I wasn't all that keen on it since it really felt like we had something special.
I actually kept a copy of that site...just for kicks. If anyone is interested in some old school bullshit...feel free to check it out
http://www.noinc.com/mark/baboonfarm/
It hasn't been touched (or probably seen) since 1998. There are probably broken links and everything else all over it...I just pasted the directory from an archival CD that I have onto the server. AND DON'T FLAME ME...I wrote this stuff a long time ago.

YOU RAN THAT SITE??? Man...honestly, That has been....and will always be...my fav DMB Fan Site. I used to go there and read everything you had and just wish that I was a fan back in the Trax days. I remember reading how you hated crash at first then took another time to listen to it and gave it a better review with a more "open" mind.baboonfarmer wrote:This is my first post...just wanted to extend my thanks to the guys behind this site. But that site really opened me up to the Dave Matthews Band as....well....the "old" DMB and I can't thank you enough for that.
I'm psyched you kept a copy of the site up becuase I want to go back over it.....relive some of the old days!
As for your comments about thanking us for the site....that's exactly what it's here for. If this site is here for ANYONE.....it's here for someone like YOU. And I say this not to undermine all the rest of dmbtabbers. I tab songs for myself because I want to play DMB songs accurately.......BUT, the reason for the website is becuse I want to give back to a DMB community that has given me so much. You had a big part in getting me into DMB and for that I am just as grateful as you are for this site. ENJOY and feel free to e-mail me or IM me with any questions(as of course that goes for everyone).
ENJOY!!!

I'm glad to hear that you remember! That site was fun for me...since no one was really into the band back then (at least compared to now) it was kinda like therapy for me...I got a lot of great feedback from that site...alot of hate mail too...but that's what happens when you express yourself.
I actually got away from the online DMB community because of people like that one guy who flamed me a couple of days ago for some comment I made about Seek Up. The community got flooded with pseudo-expert kids who were more about the scene and less about the music.
I really appreciate this place because, by definition, its a musically centered discussion. Really nice job on this site JKanter...I mean really. I run an interactive firm in Baltimore (http://www.noinc.com) and I can honestly say that the site itself is very well done...as a guitar player (been playing Dave stuff for...wow...almost 10 years) I can honestly say that the tabs are great...and as a fan I can say that I'm happy to see such dedicated people in the community.
Cheers!!

do u mean minarets as in minarets.net??? that site used to kick ass, i think it was called digs dmb archive or somethin, but it used to kickass... that was the first dmb message board i wasn't afraid of posting inbaboonfarmer wrote:This is my first post...just wanted to extend my thanks to the guys behind this site. He actually meant the old minarets mailing list. I believe the minarets.net was the website for the mailing list....but back in the day(94ish I think)....people traded tapes by putting ads in a mailing list that went around to anyone on it. It also had info on DMB shows(setlists probably) and all other stuff DMB....baboonfarmer can fill you in more on it I bet. It was pretty cool from what I hear(I was never on it). That is also how nancies got started. They were a mailing list first....of course, as baboon farmer stated.....too much elitism these days....not enough about the music. It's funny but read the 2nd "True Reflections" on his site.....it mentions that "Elitism" and that was back in like 98 or whatever.....so you can imagine what it's like now!BigSpeen3436 wrote:do u mean minarets as in minarets.net??? that site used to kick ass, i think it was called digs dmb archive or somethin, but it used to kickass... that was the first dmb message board i wasn't afraid of posting inbaboonfarmer wrote:This is my first post...just wanted to extend my thanks to the guys behind this site. Well, once again, your welcome for the site...and also, once again, thank you very much for yours. As you stated above...this site is really all about the music of the Dave Matthews Band(clearly focusing on Dave's guitar work). While we do have other forums to talk all DMB and whatnot....the MAIN forum on this site is for talk about Guitar...and that's really what the site is about. We are not the typical board members here and you usually...USUALLY...won't see anyone fighting over whether the 12min, 15sec mark of 12/38/97 Seek Up was better than the 14min, 12sec mark of 2/30/99 Seek Upbaboonfarmer wrote:I'm glad to hear that you remember! NOW...your in B-More??? I go to school in at Univ of Maryland, College Park. We should get together some time and jam for a bit. It'd be nice to get together w/ some who loves to play DMB to jam a bit to that....but what I do love is getting together with someone who has similar tastes and just jamming in general(not just DMB)......it's fun and...hell...FUN! Anyway, drop me an e-mail or IM and maybe we can work something out around work/school.
Once again, welcome to the site and stick around...it's really the best DMB forum on the net with great people and all the information/help you will ever want regarding DMB Music.
GOTTA GO TAKE A CRIMINAL JUSTICE TEST....I LOVE SCHOOL!!!!.....wait, no I don't.....have a good one and keep on playin

Minarets
Minarets was the original DMB listserv. I remember using my Pine account at Roanoke to get the posts (PineMail...jeez...I'm old...hehehehe).
Brian Pace was the man behind alot of that stuff.
Minarets was unbelievable. It was a bunch of people who used to go to Trax and Floodzone...or the local college bars all over Virginia. In the early 90s, it wasn't uncommon for you to have Dave by himself at your fraternity house in the afternoon, then go see the band at the local college bar (for us it was the Barrelhouse in Salem) and then go to some outdoor festival type thing on Sunday and see them again.
Then you'd go onto Minarets, discuss the shows, and see who got the soundboard feed. It was sick.
The list broke up as more and more newbies figured it out and started to ask "Who is Ann?" 400 times a day. We tried to create a "double secret" Minarets list...but it never worked. It just got more and more fragmented and the real old school knowledgable Dave people kinda fell back into the shadows.
JKanter - I'd love to get together sometime and jam...no doubt. I'm actually in the process of getting a HD-28. Once I get thing, you won't be able to stop me!!

Re: Minarets
I remember your site. It was one of the first I ever stumbled across way back when. And its funny how the "old school knowledgeable people" today went to their first shows in 1998. Haha. I was reading some of your true reflections and whatnot, and its funny how the same issues are around today that have always been around, just on a much larget scale. Anyway, thanks for helping to get things going with the online stuff. Hopefully you'll continue to post here...this is a great board that is relatively active but moves at a pace that people with lives can handle. Haha.baboonfarmer wrote:Minarets was the original DMB listserv. I remember using my Pine account at Roanoke to get the posts (PineMail...jeez...I'm old...hehehehe).
