The digi001 is pci-based (and thus requires a desktop and is not very portable), though is very cool. It has 6 inputs, including 2 with Focusrite mic preamps. Same software. Also very cool, but I myself don't need it and therefore don't want to spend the extra money.

Don't use it, but I know some about it. It gives you way more features, and it could easily handle the 5 mic input you're talking about for your drums. I think it can do up to 8 standard analog tracks at a time...

Also the quality will be even better than with the mbox as the hardware is better, speeds are faster, and it includes a PCI card for your computer.

If you've got the cash to spend and want a top of the line portable system, go with the digi002.

i think for the money....the mbox is the way to go....portable....good quality...i can still use a mixer to get the amount of inputs i need.....is the mbox the way to go?

All I can say is that as soon as I get the cash, I'm getting one of the new Mac 12'' titanium notebooks along with an mbox...

Ummm... I'm not sure about that. Hardware better (I think it's the same hardware, just more of it), speeds are faster (since the mbox is only transmitting two tracks at a time, the bandwidth limits of usb do not slow it down).

The digi001 will probably work for your application. I agree that the digi002 is the shit (firewire baby!).

That's your easiest job :) ... let them use a mac for 5 minutes, they'll be hooked.

I guess what I mean by saying that the hardware is better is that you can do more stuff at the same time. I do think that transfer rates will be better and the degradation of sound less though, as you have that dedicated pci card installed, manufactured by the digidesign folks...

Well, the transfer rates are the same for both the mbox and the digi001, since they're both realtime (and the usb does not slow the mbox down). There should be no (at least VERY little) degradation with either, even with USB as it is a completely digital transportation medium.
