Please give a listen to some of my band's music.

Unread post by DreaminBassMunky » Thu Jul 27, 2006 1:13 am

Hey everybody. It's been some time (again...although at this point I seriously doubt if anyone still remembers me:) ) but I'm back at least momentarily to share something I'm very proud of. This is a 4 song EP from my band "The Tup" (Tup being a male sheep, in case you were wondering). We're a local high school band from Concord New Hampshire, my hometown, that's been together for roughly a year and a half. We started out as a trio playing prog-rock (yeah....what were we thinking?) and then after a year of being scorned by virtually everyone in our town, we added a 4th member (keyboards and assorted percussion) and made an amazing transformation into a sort of dancy post-punk band, much along the lines of Franz Ferdinand, Q and Not U, The Futureheads, etc. Anyways this past year we recorded a 4 song EP (entitled "Mr. Suitcase") of tunes that we decided were ready for the studio. We then proceeded to make a massive number of copies of this CD and give them out to anyone and everyone who showed interest in us. Needless to say it was a huge success. So I decided it was about time to pass the fun onto everyone here at dmbtabs! So here it is: the debut 4 song EP from The Tup. Enjoy! (tracks are posted in order)

Any and all comments/questions/suggestions/praise/money can be sent to me via email at run.like.a.cantelope@gmail.com . If you like what you hear you may be happy to know that The Tup may be returning to the studio to release a full album that would be inclusive of the 4 songs here, and 8 or so others.

But then again, maybe we won't...

In the meantime though I am currently in the midst of a home recorded solo record. I plan to post that here once it's all finished up (probably in the next couple of weeks).

On a final note, if anyone who reads/listens to anything here and wants to book The Tup for a gig in NH, please let me know through the same email address. I know this is wishful thinking at this point, but a little hope never hurt.

Thanks for listening,
Kevin

well damn, sounds like you are off to a good start. Wish ya all the best man, I think you have something there. This isn't my kind of music but I'll tell ya, your sound was good and it's the sound that is big on my college campus right now. Almost like beach boys meets british pop rock. Keep it up, good stuff for an ep. I usually can't tollerate this kind of music but I actually found myself tapping my foot and almost killed myself, that should say something :).

It has been quite awhile. I checked the date/time of your original post at first because I just couldn't believe it. :)

As for your tunes, they weren't too shabby. I gotta admit its not really my style. As soon as I heard the vocals of the first song I skipped to the next one. I'd like to hear some of your prog-rock stuff instead.

haha not a big fan of my fake British accent, eh? Unfortunatly I don't know the whereabouts of any of our prog recordings. Most of them were live bootlegs from shows we did in town. If I get my hands on any I'll let you know.

Hey man, I loves me some post-punk, so I'll give a listen.

Stop throwing furniture: Not a huge fan of the british accent. Unless you're actually British I think it's a little cheesy. But it's a good song, I liked the whole thing, maybe a little less screaming during the middle would be good though.

80's song: Timing is a little sloppy at the start, but I really like the song. The La-La-La's are great. I think the verses should have some keys going on in there too, just to fill out the sound a little. But that's personal preference. Damn cool bridge! Wow, I just got totally caught up in listening to this. It transitions quite nicely back into the disco/dance beat at the end. Great song.

Focus: It's simple, but catchy. Nice little keyboard line there. The vocals are a little weak, could use a little improvement. Is this an ode to a Ford Focus?

I wanna make you dance: Guitar is a little sloppy at the start. The bass riff during the first verse is pretty dope. The singer's voice reminds me a little of
David Byrne at times, which is a good thing.

Ovarall: Really good songwriting, and the songs are anything but predictable and boring. The vocals could use a little work, and I think you guys could play a little tighter, it sounds a little sloppy at times. But if you guys ever came anywhere near me (the other side of the continent) I'd be at your show in a heartbeat. Keep doing what you're doing, and my advice, get a myspace. I was a skeptic at first too, but it really does help with networking and getting shows.

Hey thank you for all your suggestions/comments and stuff. We actually do have a myspace which has all these songs for download. The address is:

http://myspace.com/thetup

I also might add I think it's hysterical that you think I (I am doing the vocals on Stop Throwing Furniture at Me and the end of I Wanna Make You Dance...and no, I'm not really British) sound like David Byrne, because I truly remarkable number of unrelated people have said the same thing. It must be true then! Sweet deal. Focus is an ode to our guitarist (Ben) car, a sky blue Ford Focus which we all love very dearly. Oh yes, and I love to scream, although not seriously, just because it's very funny. Try it sometime. Take a simple request like "Please pass me that ham sandwhich" and scream it over and over again. You may find that you just can't stop.

Anyways, yeah, we recorded these songs in a studio near my house, and the it cost us about 40 bucks an hour. Which isn't bad, but then again we were all high school kids at the time (now two of us are in college, or will be come this fall), so we ended up not doing as many takes as we might have had we wanted to create something with a little more polish. But it came out really good nonetheless. The guy mixing us did an amazing job, and we are really happy with the final project. I doubt we will end up recording the rest of the songs this summer, at this point we just haven't practiced enough, and probably don't have the money. We might potentially do it in the winter instead. We shall see. If we do, the recordings will definitly be posted here.

Thanks again,
Kevin

i dont think i really like, stop throwing furniture. and really the british accent is terrible. i dont like the screaming either. the song itself is pretty good.

focus, i dont really think the vocals are that great, as in the voice itself, and the lyrics...aren't the greatest. but the song is cool. i like the whole thing with the guitar and drums exiting the chorus. but like, it's really repetitive.

intro to i want to make you dance, is kind of rough sounding. im really not fond of this guys voice though. i like the tune and melody a bit more on this one. the bass thing in this one is pretty cool. then ending is cool, it has a cool power to it.

the 80s song has a pretty cool little piano intro thing. i agree wiht mitchell in that there should be more keys in this song. and the bass is sweet in this one. i do like how this one fades out all the way before, the guitar comes back in, a tad sloppy when everything comes back in, but deffiniatly has a power to it. ended very nicely.

it seems like all these songs have the same feel to them, and none of them really have a real good pop sense to them in they're something you just want to listen to alot. like nothings super catchy and everything seems to be kind of hard to get into. If that made any sense.

Hmm sort of. I don't know, I may be biased because I love post-punk but I think songs especially like Focus are uber catchy. But everyone has different definitions of catchy. I'm happy just so long as people are actually listening.

And yes, our lyrics aren't quite insightful, but we like em.

Like I said, we didn't have the money or the desire to go back and do dozens of takes of these songs. We wanted to still like them by the time we were done. Getting a song perfect in the studio in the studio occasionally damages the band's enjoyment of actually playing the song (cough cough Sweet Up and Down cough cough).

Honestly I didn't think they were catchy but thats because I don't really like that kind of music. But I know of a few friends that would eat ur stuff up and I would bet money they would say something like "wow that's preatty catchy.".
