If Carter was in control he would have appeared on Stand Up.

From what Carter has said in the past when discussing music technique for drums he wouldn't have let the drum tracks for SU happen, they were against anything he has ever done and attampted to do. Other than that, on past albums, I feel he and Dave would have alot to say about the music, but Producers have taken over a bit mnore lately. Of course I dont really know this but from interviews and such and just listening to what has been released I feel I can speculate this.

this may not be relevant, but dave choses the setlist everynight... ...i would think if carter ran the show then he would say what songs get played.

i know dave writes up the setlist but i thought it goes past the other members and they can add to it, subtract from it or switch it around.

I read that Dave was in charge of Everyday, and that it got Carter a little frustrated.

In October 2000, an energized Matthews began writing with Glen Ballard, most famous for his work with Alanis Morissette. The rest of DMB soon joined Matthews in a Los Angeles studio and quickly recorded Everyday. While the album gave the band a much-needed fresh start, Ballard's slick pop-music approach to production was very different from the creative process used to produce previous studio albums. In the end, DMB seemed unsatisfied. In fact, drummer Carter Beauford's sarcastic jibe that the band had "charts and everything" ready for them shines light on a session where the band, which had in the past collectively composed its music, morphed into a backing band for Matthews with no creative input. The February 2001 release of Everyday was a huge commercial success—the singles "I Did It", "Everyday", and especially "The Space Between" brought the band an even larger level of popularity. But like the band itself, the fanbase was disappointed with the release. Everyday's poppy, slick sound (including Dave Matthews' first ever recording sessions on electric guitar) was a great departure from the band's previous work and the complete antithesis of the songs recorded with Lillywhite.

The setlist is run by the other members like wkpgbvermalzu said. I remember dave said in an interview that sometimes he'll write up the setlist and send it over to stefan and it'll be completely changed around.

Carter or someone said that Everyday is a great Dave Matthews and Glen Ballard record.

in the charlie rose interview? I think there was some quick answers given in that interview in the studio that were lies to not start any problems. Each one in the band gave a quick 'yep'

Thats an interesting theory...any particular reason why you think that?

Just stuff that I've heard over the years. Its no secret that the band did in fact break up during the LWS. And its no secret that Carter did not like the way that Lillywhite controlled how his drums sounded. Now Carter didn't like the way Ballard had his drums sound either, but I don't count that because the band just needed to get an album out there to get RCA off their back. And Busted Stuff was only made to keep the fans who were asking for a proper release of the LWS songs around. That brings us to Stand Up, which is the first time Carter gets complete control over what he wants to sound like on an album. Carter loved Batson as a producer because he let him do what he wanted for a change, he let him experiment. I really believe SU is Carter's album, we all think he sounds like shit on it, but I think he just wanted to try something different for a change without anybody looking over his shoulder. Carter does have a lot of power in this band. I remember Dave in an interview saying that each show depends on how Carter is feeling and what kind of mood he is in, if he is into it then its going to be a good night.

when it comes to picking setlists dave said on the full band storytellers, (i also read this same comment in the biography 'step into the light') that he chooses songs for the setlists mainly with the input of carter and stefan. this is because the three of them are the ones who are constantly playing, and on occasion they will get tired and need a break. despite popular belief they are still human

Yeah. I like to think I'm pretty "with it" when it comes to the band, but I certainly didn't know that they broke up during the LWS, or that Carter hated Lillywhite's control or that Carter decided not to play much on Stand Up.

I'm not one to flippantly dismiss things like this, but I think we'd have heard about the band breaking up, even if it was only shortly. Are there sources behind this info, for posterity?
