Here are the entries for the contest. Listen to all of these great covers and vote for your favorite one. The poll will be open for 10 days because I'll be out of town and won't have internet access. Thanks for the entries.

Just a reminder that the vote is based on the quality of the COVER, not the quality of the recording. (me and my crappy audacity)

Hey, I kinda forgot about this so I didn't get a chance to send it in. Either way, here's an acapella version of #34 I did a while back:

Not really to be voted on since it was done a while ago, but I figured I'd throw it up here for fun.

Enjoy!
Ben

so if it's possible, could you take a vote off pat's and put it to sock.

do we comment in this thread? or what?

whatever, i'll do it anyway. for me it came down to two of the covers: Pat's #34 and sockcymbals WWYS.

first i'll say what i didn't like about the other ones:

Guitardmb: i've always felt PFWYG is a more chill song. yours seemed like you were angry while playing it. i guess that's your take on it, but it seemed too hardcore for a song like that

JCork: I didn't really have a specific problem with yours really. i think the problem for me was the voice. you have a strong voice, it's just too breathy. and that can definitely be worked on. otherwise good cover

Hydro: You played the guitar part really well, and your voice sounded great (for the most part) too. my problem was that it was a little one dimensional. and i guess that's the problem when you're up against multilayered tracks (like sockcymbal). as a side note, if you're not gonna have anything else come in during the intro, cut it down to one or two go arounds before you start singing instead of like 6. haha. great job though dude...(that means more than you think coming from someone who hates this song)

Graves: i'll talk about both of yours. your typical situation would have been really really great had you sped it up a little bit. that was really my only problem. same problem with the warehouse cover. both were just a little too slow on the tempo. but you did a great job with both. good work!

Globex: i really liked your take on BOWA. that intro thing was actually pretty cool (after the initial confusion). but (to me) it just didn't stand up to what pat or sock did. but i did really like it. you put your own feel to it, and that's not easy to make work.

now then! Pat: i loved it. obviously the recording quality was fantastic, and the the layering was perfect. the piano suited perfectly for the song, you just did an all around great job.

Sock: wow. awesome man. the drums were great (Something you don't hear very often on here). and when that sax came in i was really shocked. good work with that! my problem was the guitar. it just didn't work for me. seemed a little stiff. i also thought you were missing a note or two right before the bend. not huge notes, but those little ones that sets dave's guitar work apart from ours. but GREAT job. i really have to hand it to you on this one.

well fuck. i originally gave my vote to pat because i didn't have a single complaint (maybe choice of song, but that doesn't count). but after writing this post i realized that even though Sock's guitar bothered me a little, i think he definitely deserved it.

so if it's possible, could you take a vote off pat's and put it to sock.

great job everyone!!

Yah, those were all awesome.

My vote goes to Sock although there are so many things wrong with it, the effort is just outstanding. Surely the guitar is totally off for most of it and whoever is playing the bass has surely smoked too much. :) It was still quite awesome.

Thanks. I'm used to playing it 4 times through like the album version, but I've heard versions where Dave just does it solo and I think I'll agree with you; it does sound better at, say, 2 times through, if we're talking just solo.

As for one dimensional: no argument there :) Here's my recording setup:

Microphone on my webcam
Audacity

I can't compete in recording quality with 75% of the people on the boards.

hey, thanks for that constructive criticism... i think i really need to work on the recording of my vocals, its not breathy when im singing live (at least i never noticed) but the mic in close range def. picked it up, so thanks ill work on it!

Thanks for the kind words guys...

but fyi, I wasn't playing guitar...I know it sucks, heh...so I don't deserve all the credit. I also have too much recorded with those same guys and some other covers...I was a little hesitant to post it because that was definitely when I was about 14 and can do the song way better now.

Pat - I LOVED your #34. Beautiful...I was playing drums along with it earlier.

This is a great idea though, maybe once a month or something we can have a different contest for a different album...
