Tuesday's Band Session

Unread post by TimmyJ4140 » Wed Jul 12, 2006 12:12 am

Thought I'd throw out a few recordings from our rehearsal tonight. I finally brought my laptop with me to record, not for the sake of getting any quality recordings done, but just so I'd have something to listen to. All I did was set up one mic to capture the entire room, so the mix isn't great, all were done in one take, any lyrics you hear are merely babble on my part, nothing was written down, my vocals are going through a shitty P.A., and we have no bassist. All that being said, here ya go.

drums - my brother, Mike
electric guitar - Shawn
acoustic guitar or piano (with shitty solos 'cause I'm still tryin' to fill out the lack of bass) or bass- me
nonsense lyrics - me

Calypso - Umm, yeah, this one was Shawn's.

Chameleon - Herbie Hancock, great tune. Really spur of the moment, I've always loved that simple bassline, this the only tune I played bass on tonight, Shawn kinda picked on the guitar as we went along.

Funk - Another one of Shawn's, I absolutely love this song. It actually should be a bit faster, but oh well.

G Minor - A piano ballad in G minor, one of mine. No words, simple, but I love playing it, even by myself.

Katie - Another piano ballad, it came out one day while my girlfriend was holding me as I was playing piano, I love when she does that, 'cause I get so into it. Lyrics coming, it's fairly simple without them.

Mellow - Another one of Shawn's, we get so into this one.

These next three we recorded for the sake of recording them, we didn't even really end any of them, we just wanted to get something down.

Rock #1

Rock #2

Rock #3

I didn't upload 2 other tunes, "Busy" and "Hello", 'cause they were total train wrecks, and I also didn't upload our shitty cover of "Cortez the Killer." Don't ask, 'cause you ain't gonna hear 'em. Enjoy guys.

EDIT: Okay, fine, I listened to it again, and "Hello" isn't that bad, the lyrics suck my ass, I wasn't feelin' them like I was when we first did this song, but anyways, here it is:

Hello - This one's mine.

funk- sounds like it's becoming a really great song. the guitar doesnt need that like wah, envelope filter thing. it just would sound better in my oppinion to be a good crisp clean sound, with occasional manuel foot wahs thrown in.

calypso- i think that intro needs to go (as in like leave)....or go faster into the actual piano part. but i love the piano to this song, it sounds so nice with all the other parts. your guitarist does some nice solo spots too.

katie- i really like it. it's a great song to like set up for a set closer. and just has an over all great feel to it. again nice guitar.

mellow- this one also has a great feel to it. again guitar, solo awsome. or guitar lead, can't tell in this case, but this song seems like a really good jammer that goes for like 20 minutes. piano solo, not bad, you stuck to the basic riff with a nice amount of fill.

i might listen to more later. but biggest advice, get a bassist!!!

Yeah, I agree with everything too, it's been really hard, we used to have a bassist, but he's an ass, and he's gone, so Shawn and I are feeling compelled to try and fill in for what's lacking, it's a feeling we can't get over, 'cause it'd be a lot smoother sounding if we had a bassist. I shot GSR a PM, he doesn't live far from me, he's the only bassist I know of, 'cause everyone around here SUCKS. Shawn's lookin' too, so we'll get one. Thanks bro.

EDIT - And yeah, the pan flute intro on the calypso tune was just me fuckin' around, it's not going to stay, I just love fuckin' with that cheap shitty Yamaha keyboard with non-weighted keys and shitty balanced output.

Nah, that's not the one, I'll have to look next time I head over there. I'll eventually have enough cash for a nice full-size portable Yamaha digital piano. Dear God, WEEEE!!!
