Drum machines

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Drum machines

Unread post by yourheadesplode » Thu Jun 29, 2006 4:12 pm

Ok, so I have been playing with a few of my guitarist friends for a while and we have lots of fun jamming, but we seriously lack a drummer. Being a bassist helps but I would like to have some accompaniment in the form of percussion. But, we dont know any drummers.

This dilemma leaves me with one option, to download some drum machines and fiddle around with them, if not to actually play with then just to burn some time while i'm sitting around. If anyone has any suggestions on good freeware drum machine programs that would be lovely, as I have downloaded a few and the choices are practically limitless.

Also, there are drum tabs for DMB songs on the site that I found in a search. There is a collection of 6 of them at http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic ... 418#712418 If anyone could offer some help as to decoding the hieroglyphs that they call drum tabs or if anyone has had any experience in taking drum tabs and putting them into a drumming program, your experience shared would be greatly appreciated.

edit: how do you discern anything from drum tabs without any inclination of time signature?

i can help ya out man, with how dave songs are played and tabs and stuff. I gotta say tho, it will be very hard for you to put carter's licks onto a drum machine. it may sound jumbled. but try it anyways. i could also help with altering the tabs maybe so it could apply better to a drum machine

wow that sounds awesome thanks alot man. i dont really know where to start... but i guess determining which song would be the easiest to be able to come close to replicating. I dont mean I need to hear every time carter would hit the high hat in the #41 intro or anything but getting a meaty portion of the rhythm down would be good to start with.

With the program I am using, called drumsite, http://www.guitar.sk/drums/drums_main.htm it is just the demo version and it seemed to offer some pretty wide capabilities with intricate rhythm, however Im not sure about it because im still brand new to the program. Anyone who has had experience/can suggest a drum machine that would be good would be great. Anyway, I guess the first one I would like to start doing is Ants Marching because we play that pretty often, and may be one of the easier ones on the list.

The first problem I run into is not knowing what beat in the measure the notes are in the tab. Id imagine I am going to have to do some listening to the music to figure it out so I will start there. Any info you can pass me on ants marching would be much appreciated.

yeah #41 and Ants would be good tunes to do this for...basically straight time, ghost notes and hat work/percussion carter does on that tune are things to forget about for drum machine i would say. keep it simple really and if the drum mac. had a bell for the drums it would be a nice touch for #41's chorus
