Just because Marcus Miller can rip up a pentatonic scale doesn't make him the best bass player. Like people have been saying, listen to Vic on Flecktones stuff and there's some of the best basslines around; or at least more impressive than Marcus. If you really want a trip, listen to Stanley Clarke and you might just realize Marcus is just a watered down copycat of Stanley.
Blows me away that you guys will bring up people like Flea and Miller as the best before Jaco, tho. If you really listen to him with Weather Report and with WoM, he composed better than Marcus Miller, shredded better than Victor, and jazzzzzed better than anyone...w/out any of those silly frets either

Everyday should be a good day to die...

Stanley is amazing, and there's a reason why Jaco is "the world's greatest bass player."

I'm really hoping that everyone was referring to living bassists. If someone thought Flea was a better bassist than Jaco, I'd shoot them in the face.

I'd say a bassplayer ultimately needs to be appropriate for the band he's playing in, for ex. Gerald Veasly fucking rocks playing with big bands (saw the dude at north sea jazz, he grooves like there's no tomorrow) but don't let em play straight ahead jazzcombo's 'cuz he wouldn't do shit (well, he'd do a lot of shit, but it wouldn't be appropriate). Anyway, there's a lot of good bassists out there, richard bona, jeff carswell, mark egan, jimmy haslip, they all good, and if you're really interested in all of these bassplayers shine out in what they're good at, go out and buy Word of Mouth Revisited! Period.

Les is sick...he's so creative. Honestly, I don't think it matters how fast anyone can play or whether or not they use a pick...if you're doing something on any instrument that's innovative and your own style than you're a good musician imo. Les is a great example of that. I guess Flea isn't all bad...he sorta is the pioneer of slap in mainstream music, so he does deserve some credit. But he does sometimes try to play more for himself than the song it seems, which really is a sign of someone not completely in it for the music? I don't know, I don't consider myself the smartest mofo walking, but I do think I understand what music is actually about.
Do we have to stay on the topic of Stefan? Cause he is really a cool guy too. You will never catch him showing off. He knows his role in the band, which is sexy
What about Bootsy??

I think he's a bit to subtle, but i guess that just makes me appreciate when he shows off a little bit even more.
