I don't know anything about recording gear... Is this any good?
I could get it new for ~$100.

What do you guys think?

I have always been pleased with m-audio, they are a subsidiary of avid who also owns digidesign. If you have a little more money, i would go up to firewire and maybe a few more inputs, but it all depends what you need.

M-Audio is pretty much digidesign now and I love their stuff. This looks like a good deal for the money, I would buy it with no worries if you just plan on doing some guitar and vocals.

I've recorded a couple of things directly through the mic input of my laptop.

Does this give a much better sound quality?

It should definitely produce higher quality. You get some sort of preamp in that box and that mic in on the computer is about as basic as it comes.

No.

USB has no effect on the sound quality. By the time audio gets to the USB connection, it's been converted to packets of data. Generally, the line-ins and/or preamps on breakout boxes are of much higher quality than those on soundcards, which is why boxes that use USB to transfer the audio data back to the computer have less noise.

What I wanted to have is the powerfull sound Tim gets when playing Kundalini Bonfire in one show with Dave (I think you know which one)...

Do you think I can get close to it with such a device, or is it necessary a DI or something else?

hmmm im guessing your going to want some sort of preamp with plenty of gain to boost the sound. I would recommend a tube pre to warm up the sound to. I havent heard the version you are talking about though.

they are becoming closer and closer, especially since m-audio runs pro tools M-powered. If you compare the products they are very similiar. The Project Mix I/O is very powerful and probably almost as good as the 002 Factory and its 700 less.

Once companies start to merge and stuff, you never know what's going around, especially when it has to do with electronics.

I think I'm actually going to buy it!

It is also good to plug the output to my Ultrasound, instead of using the weak headphones output of my laptop.
