In the studio for the first time...(Downloads inside)
Hey guys. My "band" finally got the guts to head into an actual studio and record some of our stuff. I am a little nervous about it, but it should be fun. I just wanted to know if anyone had any advice on how to get through the day in one piece.
I am going to also do another shameless plug of our myspace page http://www.myspace.com/backdraftthemusical.
Well, thanks in advance for any responses. Y'all have a nice day!
EDIT: I have put up our "Volcano" cover onto our myspace page...i think you can download it from there if you want, if not, I can do a sendspace or YSI or something.

Planning my friend, it's all about the plan. Time is money, so you don't wanna get there and just stumble around trying to figure out what you wanna do, ya know? Know exactly what songs you wanna do, know the instrumentations, know the arrangements, and know what order you wanna do them in (the songs). This way, when you get there, you'll spend more time actually recording/mixing, and less time just standing around figuring things out.
Good luck bro, have fun.

Well, our first recording experience went pretty well. We set out to get some decent recordings that we could put on CD's for friends and hopefully make a little money at open mic nights and what not. 6 hours and $295 later, I think we accomplished that.
I posted a couple of our newly recorded songs on our myspace page. If you get a chance, you should check them out. We are pretty proud of them. Thanks!

Sure thing, here is a song called "And She Said." I think it came out alright. I play the main rhythm guitar, my friend Steve plays the more lead-ish guitar, and the girl, Danielle, plays violin and sings:mattinbeloit wrote:Can you stick them on sendspace or something, i can't get the fuckers to play on myspace...

Here is another one, called "Chinua Achebe Was Right." I don't know what the song is about or why it is named that because Steve wrote it, but he plays guitar and sings, I play djembe, and Danielle does harmony and violin:

Wow, not bad at all, you guys did well! A little critique on the recording, especially on And She Said. If you go back in, tell the guy who recorded you to go easy on the reverb. When he's shaping the reverb on the vocals especially, tell him to especially tone down the plosives on the reverb. Every time one of you makes an S sound or something it really carries, in a bad way to me. If he dosnt understand that just explain that the hi part of the reverb needs to come down ALOT. If the reverb on everything was toned down along with the plosive/hi side of it, these would be excelent. Good job, the chick has a very good voice.

Yeah, we noticed that too. The problem was that we were trying to save a little time, so Danielle did the vocals and the violin on the same track at the same time. He said that he has found that there needs to be quite a bit of reverb on the violin for it to sound its best. We tried to find a middle ground where there wasn't too much reverb on the vocals and just enough on the violin, but it was getting late, so we just sacrificed the vocals a little. The guy kept our stuff on file just in case we wanted to change anything, so we might go back in eventually. Thanks for the critique!mattinbeloit wrote:Wow, not bad at all, you guys did well! I like this one alot, kinda reminds me of Elias by Dispatch, And Achebe was an african writer, i dunno about you all but i had to read his book, things fall apart in highschool, i dont really remember well but it was about living in africa during a time of war and how traditions can pull you through those kind of times, i dont know if that applies to the song at all, but i suppose it could, if not i guess its just not relevant but anyways i like the song alotcaptainburrito wrote:Here is another one, called "Chinua Achebe Was Right." Well, time is money, I know how that is. You guys really did do a good job, I think that your money was well spent and you did great on a budget, im a pickey ass because im majoring as a recording engineer and just pick up on stuff like that. I can understand your problem if you did them on the same track, I think it was a good decision to sacrifice the voice a bit to get the violin sounding good, because it added alot to the song, and i didn't need any reverb to tell that she had a good voice. But that's the fun thing about recording, no matter how long you spend on something you always eventually find something else you could do, and that's what get's me hooked in this game. Keep it up, you guys are off to a great start, that would make a HELL of a demo down the roadcaptainburrito wrote:Yeah, we noticed that too. -EDIT- Did you guys use protools in the studio to record these by any chance? If you did, see if you can get those files from the studio and I might be able to help you out a little bit for free
