New Gibson Digital Guitar

Unread post by cave_cricket » Fri Jan 10, 2003 11:49 am

Hey,

Has anyone seen the new Digital guitars that Gibson are putting (or will be putting out)? THey have the regular pickup and then one that can be hooked up to your computer for digital recording or what not.

What do you guys think of this? Something revolutoinary or just some gimmick to make a quick buck?

Here's a link to some info for those that don't know:

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Both the SB Extigy and Audigy Platinum can receive a 1/8" stereo connection which can easily be concerted to receive a 1/4" instrument cable. I think Gibson is just taking the next step in how you can manipulate audio recording. Did you catch the part where they mention each string has its own signal? Now you can control much more than just high, mid, and low tones. It's innovative but is it necessary?

Personally, the electric guitar can go and make all its technical leaps and bounds but I'd choose an acoustic any day of the week. It's becoming easier and easier to get too caught up in the cool toys and effects. Too each his own but I'm all about the acoustic purity.

I love the acoustic as well. I'm just thinking if they begin here with the electric guitar, how long until this technology is incorporated in to the acoustic guitar? and if it is adapted to the acoustic (and did not compromise the sound) would you be interested in it?

I think it would be something neat to try out. In order to see if it's worthwhile.

My guess is that that guitar has a midi output. That would be QUITE cool as far as transcribing notes, but why not just get a keyboard to do the same thing..

Did you guys hear about those other, INFRARED guitars that some comapny invented? It was in Popular Science a couple times, apparently, it works by casting the shadow of the vibrating string onto some laser grid, and the laser grid reads it and reproduces the sound, and it supposedly sounds AMAZING. I don't really know the specifics of how it works, but apparently it elimantes buzz and the sound you get when you slide your fingers on strings. Kinda takes some of the skill out of playing the guitar, cuz part of it is learning how to reduce that stuff on your own, but nonetheless, it sounded really cool, and people are saying it's the biggest guitar innovation since electric guitars.

I remember it being pretty expensive, too....

Okay guys, here is the skinny (I'm back  )...

Although Gibson may have their own patented technology, Line 6 is a step ahed in the sense that they just released a revolutionary guitar to he market in which analog information is converted to digital;

THIS IS AMAZING!!! Why? Because if you have ever played a guitar that claimed to be many guitars in one, this technology will downright blow it away!

If sound is digital before it reaches the output, it can be manipulated precisely to make any noise on earth in true sound!!!

the models are displayed here (these guitars are equiped with 25 classic guitars - - banjos, dobros, sitars, les pauls. strats, teles, everything!) and with an amazing producer as Line 6, you know it has got to be good. They looks sharp too!

Although it seems cheap, you must remember that this is all realatively new technology; this could very well be the start of an eectric guitar revolution! This is the next step to something HUGE!!!

yes, fire the variax guitars are absurd. the other really great guitars in my mind right now in terms of technology are the godin electrics and acoustics with built in midi pickups and dedicated outputs. superfast tracking, each string with it's own output. i really think that one of the godin electric/midi guitars is going to be my next. now if i can just get my hands on 4000 bucks for a guitar a good amp, and a good midi setup...
