Sing Like Dave???

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

hey, ive been playing dmb hardcore for about a year, its all that i ever learn to play im flat obsessed..but now im yearning to sing like him..any tips? ive run across some in the past about how to not strain your vocal chords and such...just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can let me know how they started..just because dave is so unique and his voice is hard to come close to duplicating...thanks

I always say this when this question comes up (or "play like dave?"):

MAKE THE SONG YOUR OWN!

As long as it doesn't stray from what the pattern is, you're fine. Bring something new to the table...otherwise it won't be interesting at all.

By the way, welcome to the boards.

when I posted a song on nancies.org's boards, and they told me to stop trying to sing like dave. I paused, and thought, I sound nothing like dave, and I never tried, lol.

If you want to sing like dave, be my guest, but make sure you can sing in your own way so you aren't catagorized as a dave wannabe.

The one thing I know how dave got his voice that semi rough-wraspy voice, was his use of harsh drugs earlier in his life.

I can't say anything else on how to sound like him.

when i first tried to sing along with dave i have to admit that i was trying to sound like him(shit, i was trying to play like him!). when i finally realized that i can't do it cause i'm not him i then just focused on trying to breath at all the same parts that he does so i atleast know how much voice to put into each word. other than that have no other advice.

You can't choose the voice you're born with! What you can do is do best with what you have! There are so many great bands with not so good singers!
Anyway, try to work out your own voice. It's ok to keep in mind dave's style as a reference, but try other things as well, you'll eventually, in the process, come up with your own stuff!
By the way (this is a common problem) if you can't sing some of the higher or lower notes DON'T PUSH IT TOO HARD - that's where most injuries come from! There are technics for expanding your range and they come with practice. Instead, just transpose the song to a more comfortable key.
Good Luck!

good ideas...i guess im not gonna strive for the raspy voice if its from all the drugs... but im gonna go try to work on my own voice..i think to expand on techniques and things like that i might take beginner chorus next semester just so i learn how to manage my breathing and to hold a note
