Tonight's Soundcheck

Unread post by Nitro1515 » Mon May 29, 2006 8:19 pm

One of the tapers got to hear the rehearsal/soundcheck for tomorrow's show. These are his impressions

Code: Select all

everyday
jazz jam
new song #1
slow ragtime intro to..
when the world ends x 2
ayhee
diggin a ditch
last stop outro > american baby intro
jtr
new song #2
jazzy intro to...
grey street

---

everyday: started out as dave and butch messing around, doing some scatting back and forth, then went into everyday, just dave and butch.

jazz jam: started as just butch and carter, then everyone else joined in. sounded really structured but fizzled out after about 5 minutes.

new song #1: very jazzy, reminds me a lot of seek up's jam at the end, lots of muted trumpet. rashawn adds a lot of counterpoint to roi, he wasn't doubling what roi played, he was actually laying the bulk of the horns down on this song with roi adding little accents here and there.. i couldn't really understand the lyrics very well but it had a really good beat and didn't seem overproduced.

slow ragtime jam: lots of muted trumpet and a ragtime march-esque drumming, slowly faded into the intro of when the world ends.

when the world ends: stopped halfway through and butch and rashawn worked out some organ/trumpet parts together. ran through it again.

ayhee: worked out REALLY WELL full band, sounded great. lots of counterpoint of sax/trumpet, lots of distroted hammond organ.

diggin a ditch: sounded really strong, rashawn seemed kind of lost.

last stop reprise > ab intro: yeah, this really surprised me. it started out with butch, rashawn, and roi working on it. then they ran through it and it was seriously a trainwreck at first, going right into that slower part of the last stop outro, then as it went down butch started the AB intro, then everyone brought it down and then back up into the first part of the AB intro before stopping and discussing it. if this does in fact come into play this tour it'll be one of the coolest things they've ever put together because it sounded really great just practicing, despite the trainwreck trying to get everyone to start together.

jtr: sounded a lot stronger than jazzfest. they've added a jazzy trumpet/sax jam after the last chorus, then bring it back into a chorus one more time before the big jam at the end. rashawn added a shitload.

new song #2: this song is really really good. the chorus parts were slightly different but all ended with "let's run while we can". it almost had the vibe of a really good 90's power ballad. the middle has a really strong section sung completely in 3 part harmony falsettos. the jam at the end went back into the chorus a couple times, with some really strong harmonies. rashawn laid most of the bulk of the horns and roi went back and forth between soprano sax and pennywhistle.

jazzy intro: started out with rashawn and butch playing off the intro to grey street, really slow... they worked around it quite a bit, boyd came slowly, and they built it up until carter started a drumroll and went right into grey street together... surprisingly solid, quiet but solid.

grey street: basic but still sounded damn good.

Sounds like dave's quote about taking a real live vibe w/ the new songs might work out. I'm liking all this "jazz" talk. Dave's voice isn't what it used to be but it seems the scatty rant might proove a good match w/ where the band is headed. I'm still not sure why the band needs two horns, ofcourse its a fun change but why not utilize the resource the band has already?
scatty rant

Just funny, i didn't mean scat as in shit

I'd love to hear them jamming around even if it would be semi-serious
