Hardest Song?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I would have to say typical situation is the hardest to sing and play...the guitar part is easy but finger picking it messes up my singing...i also think stone is hard to sing and play but i've been practicing it a lot lately and i've been gettin better at it and it's definitely worth it

Dave songs are pretty hard , but if you guys want to improve on your guitar playing you need to check out TR . I'm not talking about Stream and Kandilinni Bonfire , because those songs are kind of easy ( because he uses a pick ) try playing songs like Hopeful Hersey , Try a Little Harder , Reigeinous and the Ressurection , ect..... he plays those with his fingers . Most people don't know that Tim ( when not playing weird ass electric ) is one of the best finger style guitar players . He can play as fast with his fingers as he can with a pick . Check his tabs out a TimReynolds.com , but if you want acurate tabs go looking through the message board first . Cheers !

hard ones

Unread post by gravedigger » Sun Oct 27, 2002 8:36 pm

the question was hardest Dave song to sing/play right? the last post was kindof a digression - yes Tim Reynolds is from another planet. Dave is just a freak. I guess the higher the practice time/progress ratio is the harder it would be so It would probably be The Stone but I do have it beat down pretty good now. Proudest Monkey, Typical Situation, Lie In Our Graves are tricky. When the World Ends is also tricky. I think Dave has two brains :D

i have noticed that dave's lyrics go alone with his playing. trippin billies is a good example, spoon is also a good one. i'd have to say that trippin billies is the toughest for me to play and sing. if you look at it in that perspective, the words go with the music, you might pick it up better. warehouse is tuff but mostly cause my lungs aren't big enough.

Halloween

Unread post by gravedigger » Tue Oct 29, 2002 4:29 pm

Halloween is hard to sing and play at the same time - at least for it to sound half decent. But that's me.

41 is hard?

C'mon StarSlight, I think you just found some shoddy tabs. If you have the right chords and know the words you can get it in a night, easy. JKant's got the wrong intro posted; the real intro is below. What he has under intro is actually what you play in jam-mode. Why? Because it's a)less interesting to listen to, and b) easier to screw with (ie: i change it to a 'two step' rhythm after my fiddler has his 8 bars and slide up off of the second chord).

The intro plays itself by now(not gonna bother with names; low E on left, high on right):

5|3|2|5|x|x
7|5|4|7|x|x
x|7|5|7|8|x *
x|5|4|x|3|x
*This chord JK has tabbed as x|7|5|4|8|x; don't play that one quite yet, sry

Main part of the song isn't too hard, just make sure you play it slow enough; i know i rushed it the first few times i played it w/ the rest of my group :)

As for the strummed chords on the 'i will go in this way, and find....' part, it's just more practice; the only part that i have had trouble with is getting the rhythm correct when you sing "(when) i will, bring water" why? Because i suck, that's why. Here are the chords:

3|2|x|4|x|x
2|x|2|3|x|x
6|5|x|7|x|x*
*Okay, not positive if this is right. I just move there when i play...But i sang the roots of the chords in the comp. lab here at the U(m) and i counted half-steps up to the right note; hope i guessed correctly :)

Hope this helps you out StarSlight, and btw, corgan does own.

While i still consider myself a fux0ring n00b {i have a really good friend, who's amazing at guitar [ie: he can accurately play 'Winter Solstice' by Tea Party (d/l it)]}, it seems that dave stuff is just on a wacky learning curve. Sure you can pick up a song or two here and there, but if you want to actually know what you're doing, and have the skills to master stone and warehouse, you need to be pretty damned determined. As for hardest sing/play i'd have to say not stone (because that's actually possible, it's just fast) but warehouse. I have yet to meet someone who can actually play that song. I don't mean someone who can slop together the intro progressions, i mean someone who fluidly play the song. Honestly, you know you can't....but if you can, drop me a line (i posted my e-mail along w/ my AIM s/n).

Turns out that post took a while, and know i have to do a whole shitload of h/w before class at 11. Thanks guys, way to screw me into tabbing...

Peace guys,
Will

The third chord on the chorus is a C - 8-X-7-9-X-X (I take it you just made a mistake typing it out, Will)

and for anyone who cares:
5|3|2|5|x|x = Am
7|5|4|7|x|x = Bm
x|7|5|7|8|x * = Em7
x|5|4|x|3|x = D but I like to play X-5-4-0-3-X = Dsus4 or D11

Likewise Grave,
I now have my guitar with me; the third chord in the stummed bit is:
8|7|x|9|x|x

Thx for the chord names Grave.
Time to get my learn on,
Will

yeah, looks like I made the mistake --- 8-7-X-9-X-X is right, Will.

One of Dave's best songs (IMHO). Excellelent (the spelling looks wrong but what the hay)

peace,
Ken

Actually.....this is how Dave plays the chord in the intro....check out video's, he may play the other way for the jam(I'm not realy sure) but he DEF plays it the way I have it for the intro.....peace

Don't feel like starting a flame war, so lets just say he plays notes at that part.

Time to hit another thread.

In terms of singing, I always have trouble with Jimi Thing which is discouraging since I really enjoy playing it.

The verse part is not to bad but when you get into the bridge part where it goes "If you could keep me flloating..." it starts to get tricky.

Then the next section is where I really struggle when it goes "Sometime a Jimi thing slide my way..." which is a pattern that repeats.

Also Granny has some tricky parts to sing. Then there are the high notes in Satellite that push my vocal chords past the limit.

Is this just me or do other people find it hard to sing Jimi Thing?

Thanks for trying to help, but I just can't get it. I can play and sing it just fine if I cheat and play regular chords, but the voicings Dave uses for the intro are quite simply impossible. Especially standing up.

#41 is definitely harder than Tripping Billies.

The hardest Dave Matthews song....
a lot of people have been voting for The Stone, which I really think is the hardest one, hands down. If any of you have seen Dave play it early on, acoustic, by himself (I believe he played on some TV show that was just amazing) you can see how complex the entire song is. The beginning riff is hard to get down, but once the singing starts it complicates exponentially. All those slides! Dave keeps it really cool with the singing though, which is why it gets my vote.
As for those who say Typical Situation, you just need to practice your picking patterns a little bit more. After a while, it becomes second nature and you can stop thinking about it while you sing.
